Good afternoon!

The children had a lot of fun today sharing their stories during show-and-tell.  Many interesting things, such as instruments, food and personal artifacts were brought in to share with the class.  It was a great way to practice presenting for our upcoming oral presentations.  We are looking forward to the next round of presentations (Nathan, Jewel, Abel, Shannon, Alex and Klara).  Today we also had our weekly spelling test.  Children will be bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight.  In math we worked on counting and subtraction (grade one) and times zones and double digit problems (grade two).  In science we continued with our new unit, and the students worked on case studies about children who have encountered dangerous chemicals and discussed how these situations should be handled.  The children also went to french class today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in reading chart, and re-write incorrect spelling words.

Important information:  I am noticing that many children are coming to school with reading charts that have not been filled out in quite some time.  Some children have not indicated any home-time reading in over a month.  Please make sure that your children are reading at home and inputting their reading into their charts.  The children earn reading certificates when they have completed 5 charts, which is a goal many children still need to complete!

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon!

We had a great day today!  We started off the day by working in our math books.  The children practiced adding and subtracting two digit numbers and working with temperature (grade two) and counting money (grade one).  In language the children correctly finished sentences about Aaron's serpent and then practiced their proofreading skills.  We also started a new science unit today on The Properties of Liquids and Solids.  The children read a comprehension activity about chemical safety and watched a video about household chemical safety.  The children also went to music, french and P.E today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes, practice weekly spelling words for the test tomorrow, and Language page 74 (grade one) page 68 (grade two).

Important information:  Tomorrow we are beginning our first round of Show-and-Tell.  Julia, Jaymes, Victoria, Temi, Jessica and Nathan will be presenting.  The rest of the class will present next Friday (Jan 14th).   Please see my blog from yesterday for more information about these Show-and-Tell presentations and how you can help your child prepare.

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day by working on language  The children were asked to practice their proofreading, they completed sentences, identified compound words, and worked with special sounds.  In math we worked on counting money (grade one) and using calendars and thermometers (grade two).  We also played a money counting game where the children had to race to count out different amounts of real life coins.  Julia was our class champion today!  In social studies the students began their research on the different cultures they are studying.  Various facts were given to each student about their culture and they were required to record them on their rough copy.  Children who did not finish their note taking are bringing it home for homework tonight.  The children also went to french and drama classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, math pages 65 - 66 (grade two), finish culture rough copy.

Important information:  Please make sure that the students are not doing additional research (online or in books) on their culture project.  They do not have to have the entire sheet filled out.  They only have to have the facts on their small sheet they were given today transferred onto their rough copy into the appropriate areas.  Computer research will be done in school in the days to come.
The rubrics for the culture project have been sent home with your child tonight.  We went over the rubric and expectations in class today, so all children have now been given the opportunity to get very high marks on this project!
In preperation for the oral presentations that are a part of the social studies project, I am going to begin show-and-tell times in class.  I hope these mini presentations will give students the opportunity to become comfortable presenting in front of the class, and will give them practice organizing an interesting and exciting presentation.  Presentations will begin this Friday.  I have a schedule attached at the end of this post.  Please feel free to help your child prepare for their show-and-tell presentation at home, as these presentations will be going towards their overall oral presentation progress.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We had a great first day back today from the holidays.  The children all seemed very well rested, and like me they seemed excited to get back to school!
We started off the day today by gathering in a group on the carpet and shared stories about the holidays with each other.  The children all took turns filling us in on what they all did over the holidays which was very interesting to hear.  Once the stories were told the students copied down the new weekly spelling words, and worked in their spelling books.  The children also worked on spelling words that have vowels paired with the letter 'y' and practiced their cursive.  In social studies we began a new project exploring cultures.  The children have all begun researching the culture their family belongs to or comes from and will eventually turn their research into a brochure to present to the class.  Today the children showed what they already know about their family's culture, and tomorrow we will begin doing our research.
The children also went to music, french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 56, and cursive page 68 - 69.

Important information:  Please note that the culture project is not for homework at this point.  Some students accidentally brought it home, but it does not need to be completed.  Additional research will be done at school in the days to come.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
