Good afternoon!

In today's class we continued working on creating number sentences (grade one) and deciphering word problems (grade two).  In language the children worked on filling in the blanks to create sentences, wrote a story about pets, and we continued working on chapter five of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in our literature groups.  The children also went to music, french, P.E and drama classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words for tomorrow's spelling test, practice Valentine's Day play lines, practice poetry, Chapter Five of the novel study, and math page 109 - 110.

Important information:  As the concert is only a few days away, it is very important that the children continue to practice their lines to perfection.  Many of them still do not know their parts, and need to be prompted by Mrs. Deras.  Please make sure they are reading over their lines many times in the next two nights so they can give their best performance on Saturday.

We are doing a Valentine's Day craft tomorrow afternoon.  If you could please send in either a brown paper bag, or a large envelope with your child tomorrow morning to be decorated, that would be great.

If your child is in the choir, we are asking that they have black bottoms and a red top to wear for the concert.  If they do not have black bottoms they may wear their dark gray St. Jude's pants.

Please continue to read Mrs. Deras' blog for important information about prop and costume requirements for the Gala.

This Monday is going to be the next spirit day.  It is a 'red and white' themed spirit day, as it is occurring on Valentine's Day (it was originally scheduled for today but was moved to Monday).  We are going to have a small party in the afternoon on Monday the 14th where snacks and Valentine's Day cards may be delivered.  If you would like your child to hand something out, please send it with them on Monday.

Poetry competition is happening in our class on the 17th of February.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day be working on math.  The children worked on addition sentences and time (grade one) and patterning, time, and money (grade two).  During language the children worked on finding special sounds, word definitions, two, too, to, proofreading, creating sentences and cursive.  We also read another chapter of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.  The children also went to french and drama classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes, practice spelling words, practice Valentine's Day play script, practice poetry, cursive pages 81 - 82, and Language pages 88- 89.

Important information:  Please read Mrs. Deras' blog for information about the upcoming play.  She has costume and prop needs that hopefully can be addressed for the performance on Saturday night.

I hope that everyone that I didn't hear back from today will be attending the event on Saturday night.  It is going to be a great time!

Please check with your child about their pencil and eraser situation.  Many children are down to their last pencils and erasers and are having to borrow from others daily.  This makes for a lot of extra work for them at the beginning of every work period.  Please help them stay prepared by refilling these supplies if needed.

The poetry competition is taking place in our classroom on the 17th (next Thursday).  Remember, it is 50% the memorization of the poem and 50% the voice and passion displayed will saying the poem aloud.  We have been discussing in class how paying attention to the grammar and punctuation in the poem will really help with the way it is recited.

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon,

Today we started off the day by working on language.  The children were asked to answer questions in complete sentences, and organize words using alphabetical order.  During math the children worked on using manipulatives to create subtraction sentences (grade one) and worked on subtraction problems that required 'borrowing' from the tens category (grade two).  We also continued reading the next chapter in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.  The children had a chance to work together in groups to summarize and discuss the chapter and record their discussions in their booklets.  The children also went to music, french, P.E and drama classes.

Homework: Read for 15 minutes, practice spelling words, practice poetry, practice Valentine's day play, Language page 91 - 92 (grade one) page 86 - 87, finish book study chapter four.

Important information:  Please see Mrs. Deras' blog about the upcoming Valentine's Day play. She has posted some important information about costumes and props that are needed by our class.

We are having another practice session with Mrs. Deras tomorrow.  Only a couple of students received the 2,000 house points today for having their parts memorized.  Tomorrow will be another chance to have it completely memorized for points!

Tomorrow is pizza day.

Most of the children in our class have now gotten to the point where they have used or lost all of their erasers.  If you could please send in another eraser or two for your child that you have at home it would greatly help the speed and quality of the written work we do in class.  A few do still have one they are using, but it can't hurt to have a back up for them in their bin just in case.  Thank you.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day by recording the new weekly spelling words.  The children then spent some time practicing their words in their spelling books.  In language the children worked on special sounds, past and presence tense, rhyming, and opposites.  In math we worked on subtraction.  The grade ones practiced subtraction sentences, where the grade twos worked on subtraction word problems.  In history we read about the history of Buddhism.  The children heard about the caste system of ancient India and how Buddha came to be.  The children also went to french and art class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, practice poetry, practice Valentine's Day play lines, Letters and Sounds pages 71 - 72, and finish colouring the picture of The Buddha if necessary.

Important information:  Please see Mrs. Deras' blog about information about the upcoming Valentine's day play.  All children need to have their parts down pat.  We are having a practice period tomorrow with Mrs. Deras, and whoever comes to school with their part memorized will earn themselves 5,000 house points!

I hope that all families are coming to the Gala this Saturday night, as it is going to be a great time.  If you and your child will unfortunately not be attending, please let me know via a note in their agenda by tomorrow so I can pass that information on to Mrs. Deras. As of now, all children have a part in the play for that evening and will need to be in attendance.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
