In today's class we did more work with Ancient Egypt by exploring the myths of their ancient gods.  We then wrote and illustrated stories of Osiris, Isis and Set and the family problems they had.  During math we did work on numbers and the different ways you use them in the real world, calendars, clocks and money.  In language we worked on vowels and sentence construction.

For homework tonight:  finish math work pages 5 - 8, cursive writing, reading for 15 minutes, and the hieroglyphs of your child's name if they are not already finished.

Items to remember: Please make sure to label your child's clothes and uniform as it will greatly help reduce the confusion and lost clothes at school.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays your children need to come dressed in their gym clothes.  Lastly, please make sure your child has indoor running shoes, black dress shoes, and their outdoor shoes to wear outside.

Our grades one and two did an excellent job working on their vowel sounds, cursive writing practice, and their estimation skills.  We also had our first music and P.E classes, which they very much enjoyed!
For homework tonight:  read for 15 minutes, complete hieroglyphs if necessary, and continue their cursive practice on the letters 'e' and 'i'.
Your child has a reading chart that is going to go home with them every night in their 'Home Folder'.  This chart helps them to track their reading progress.  I would like them to fill it out and bring it back and forth with them each night.  Homework sheets and other important information will also be going home with them in their Home Folders.

Our grade one and two class had a wonderful second day of school today. I am really excited about how this school year is starting off!
In today's class we began exploring ancient Egypt, practiced our addition, created number stories and worked on getting to know each other.
Beginning Monday of next week, I am going to begin sending the children home with a list of spelling words.  These words should be practiced for homework every night, as a spelling test will be administered on Fridays.  I will post the list of spelling words for grades ones and twos on my blog on Mondays for easy access.
For tonight's homework: reading for 15 minutes, finish math worksheet if needed and complete the personal hieroglyphs of their name.

First Day of School

Today was a great first day of school!  I think the grades ones and twos really had a successful time adjusting themselves back into school.  In today's class we shared our summer vacation stories, started our math workbooks, created our classroom rules and procedures, and read about the meaning of 'history'.  It was a very exciting day!
The agendas did not go home tonight, as St. Jude's has not yet received them.  We hope to be getting them in very soon to help your child organize their studies. For tonight's homework, I ask that your child read for 15 minutes, and share with you their version of 'history'.
I look forward to a great year.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
