Good afternoon!

We started off the day today by working on language. The children practiced writing stories, solved riddles, did a crossword and completed sentences.  During math the children worked on the beginning steps of multiplication.  They were asked to form objects into groups and then see how the groups can then be added as wholes, instead of individual parts. They also practiced subtraction and addition.  In science today we continued with life cycles of animals.  We did a review of what we have learned to date, had a quiz on the life cycle of a butterfly and watched a video discussing how all living things have life cycles.  As a class we read a story about a girl from Russia who's grandmother made blintz to help bring spring to Minsk.  This story is an old tale from Russia, and I thought it was a nice way to encourage the children to become more open-minded.  This is an important element of the IB Learner Profile.  It's been very enlightening taking the IB course these past few months, and everyone at SJA is really excited to be able to bring the IB program to our school next year!

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice spelling words, math page 180 - 181 and Life Cycle story and presentation due tomorrow.

Important information:  Please see my blog from earlier this week explaining the Life Cycle take-home project that is due tomorrow.  The children have a rubric that should be read and followed to ensure great marks for everyone!

Tomorrow is the last day to bring in Skate-a-thon pledge money!  Please make sure all forms and monies are brought it tomorrow so SJA can reach our fundraising goal!

Scholastic book orders are due tomorrow if anyone is interested in purchasing anything.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We had a great day today!  We started off the day by working on language.  The children worked on suffixes, finished sentences, wrote stories and practiced matching.  In math today we continued on with our numbers unit.  Today we practiced composing and decomposing numbers in various ways using snap cubes.  It was a nice method of having some hands on practice working with numbers.  We continued reading Pipi Longstocking today as well and then wrote a language response to the story.  Today the children wrote a story about The Day I Was a Thing-Finder, based on the chapter we read.  They also went to french and drama classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 130 - 131, Math page 179, complete language story, and This Is My Life Cycle due Friday.

Important information:  Please see my posting yesterday regarding the take-home science assignment that is due this Friday.  The children all brought the assignment home last night and must have it to bring back to school to present on Friday.

The Skate-a-thon fundraiser deadline is this Friday (May 6th).  Please make sure all money is brought in to the school by Friday morning.  Prizes will then be drawn and awarded!

The final math re-test was completed today at lunch recess.  Children are bringing home their marked math tests with them tonight.

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We had a great day today.  We had a lot of fun together and got a lot accomplished!  We started off the day today by working on language.  The children worked in their journals, worked on story writing, and sentence construction, proofreading, vowel sounds and special sounds.  During math the children worked on a review of addition and subtraction and roman numerals.  In science today we continued on with our life cycles unit.  Today the children began studying the life cycles of animals. It was a lot of fun!  We spoke about chickens, fish, butterflies and humans.  Ask your child tonight to tell you what they learned.  We watched a neat video of the real-life hatching of a chicken egg.  If you are interested in seeing it again tonight you can go to this link:  http://www.msichicago.org/online-science/videos/video-detail/activities/the-hatchery/  The children also went to music, french and P.E.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Language page 144 - 145, math page 177 - 178, and 'This Is My Life Cycle' assignment and presentation due on Friday.

Important information:  Skate-a-thon money can be turned in until May 6th (this Friday).  Please make sure to have all funds collected and submitted by that time.  We still haven't met the $7000 goal, but we hope to do so by this Friday!  Also, the prizes will be awarded at that time!  Very exciting!

The Scholastic book order forms and money are due by Friday if anyone is interested in purchasing anything.

The final math re-test for the 3D geometry unit will be taking place tomorrow at lunch recess for those children who still need to re-take the test.

I am sending home a take-home science project.  In this assignment the class has been asked to go home and find out about themselves.  They have questions they need to answer about how they have moved through their own life cycles so far.  Please help your child answer these questions.  There is a space at the bottom where photos can be attached.  These photos will be returned upon completion.  The assignment is due this Friday.  A presentation to the class on their personal life cycle will be completed on Friday.

Progress reports will be coming home on Friday of this week.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Here are some pictures I had taken while the class worked on their paper mache masks!

Good afternoon!

It was nice to get back to school today after a weekend away!  We started off our day today by recording the new spelling words and working in our spelling books.  During language the children also worked on rhyming, matching, special sounds, vowel sounds and cursive.  During math we started our new unit:  addition and subtraction.  In today's class we worked on constructing and deconstructing numbers, and number lines.  We started a new literature activity today as well.  As a class we began reading Pipi Longstocking and then the children did an independent summary on what they read.  Pipi is an unusual character that I think will be a very fun and interesting story to read together!  The children also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive page 102 - 103, and complete chapter review if necessary.

Important information:  The SJA summer uniforms can now be worn.  These uniforms are not mandatory, but they are a nice, cool option to wear during the warmer weather (when it gets here!).  This uniform consists of their gray pants/tunic/skirt, with the SJA crested polo.  They do not have to wear a sweater or vest if they are wearing their polo shirt.

Progress reports are coming home on Friday with your children.

Scholastic book order forms are coming home with your child tonight.  If you are interested in purchasing anything from this order please send the forms and monies by Friday, May 6th, 2011.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
