Happy Friday!

Today we started the day off with some fun Spirit Week house games in the gym. All the students look great in green! After the spirit day games we went back to complete our weekly spelling test. The test was based on  words end with a consonant and require doubling of that consonant before adding the ending.  Students are expected to rewrite each word spelt incorrectly ten times over the holiday. Later on we also had a chance to work through two pages of our cursive book. Some students will have to complete that over the break.

Later on we continued to present our UOI summatives. The presentations were insightful, interesting and well organized. It was a pleasure to see the students talk about their chosen topics. I’ve been adding pictures of each student with their fantastic boards so parents can see the end result of all those hours of research and preparation.

In mathematics, we completed our unit 7 math test. Overall the test was done very well and the students have really grasped the concepts around motion geometry. Later on in the day we had a chance to work on our ABeka as well. We began to work through page 71. Students who were unable to complete that will have to work on it over the March Break.

Today students also attended Art, Gym and French.

I hope everyone and their families have a fantastic and safe March Break!

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log, re-write incorrect spelling words, ABeka page 71 and cursive page 70 and 71.

Important Information:

March Break runs from March 10th - 21st.

We are excited to announce the commencement of our recorder program as part of the SJA Arts Curriculum for grades 1 through 6. Recorders will be used as a means to explore, practice and showcase the musicality of the students at St. Jude’s.  The recorder program will begin in Term 3, and will be a large part of the Term 3 Art assessments.
Students may choose to bring in their own recorders from home if they are already in possession of the instrument in the soprano range. Families also have the option of buying a recorder directly from St. Jude’s for $10.00.  These recorders will become the possession of the student to be used throughout Term 3 and will be taken home with them to keep at the end of the program.
We look forward to the enjoyment and education that is sure to follow this exciting musical program!

Registration has now been opened up to the public.  If you have not yet returned your re-registration package for next year please do that quickly so that your child doesn't miss a spot!

St. Jude’s is starting their very first Soccer Club. Try outs are the third week of March. The team will be made up of students 10 and under.

Best regards,

Happy Thursday!

Today we started the day off with some fun Spirit Week house games in the gym.

After that we started our Pioneer Day! All the grade threes went back to class where we reviewed all the rules students and teachers must obey at school. Next we used slate board to complete a test in arithmetic, handwriting and even a pioneer themed spelling test. Students also enjoyed their pioneer styled lunches (I have to tip my hat to all the parents who creatively put those lunches together!). We had a chance to hear from four great presenters for our summative also today. The presentations I’ve heard so far have been interesting, insightful and very well done.

In the afternoon we split into groups and had a chance to complete four interesting activities.  The children had a chance to explore aboriginal games that honed their hand eye coordination, which is a skill necessary for hunting. Students also learned how to weave tapestry, a skill essential for pioneers. Hemming their older siblings clothes to become their own was just a fact of life. Students were also exposed to some interesting pioneer games, the favourites were the Cudgel Game and Pitch, No Smiling. The students also had a chance to make their own butter and learn discuss the process that the pioneers used to create butter. As an end to a great day we all went to the kitchen to enjoy the student’s homemade butter on some freshly baked bread.

March reading logs will be distributed tomorrow so in the meantime please just keep track of all the great reading your children have been doing at home! Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused!

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log and Math review for test (which will be on March 7th), practice for your inquiry presentation (held on Friday) and Spelling test tomorrow!

Happy Wednesday!

Today we started the day off with some fun Spirit Week house games in the gym. All the students look very interesting in their backwards day outfits! After the spirit day games we went back to the room to reflect on term 2. During our reflection time we worked on reflecting on this term in three categories. Something I Did Well On, Something I Learned, Something I can Work On. Being a reflective learner is a valuable and necessary part of the learning process. Reflecting give students an opportunity to look at the work they have completed and see their progress.

Later on we continued to work on our last day of summative preparation. On Friday we will all present the projects to the class. During our presentations the students will be graded against the rubric put up on the blog last week under the title “Unit of Inquiry: Summative” I cannot wait to see what the students will present! We had a chance to hear one of our class members present today who told us all about Aboriginals. Sofia told us about what different members of the families did as well as how their traditional lifestyles differ from ours. There is an image below!

In mathematics we continued to study and prepare for the math test which will be held on March 7, 2014. In class we have had a chance to explore concepts in multiple ways. Many ways have been very hands on. While at home practising for the test please be aware that they can practice on graph paper as well as Triangular Dot Paper. I will be sure each student takes home a piece tonight to continue to practice with it. Please continue to work on exploring these concepts at home with your children. Later on in the day we had a chance to work on our ABeka as well. We began to work through pages 69-70.

Today students also attended Art, Gym and French.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log and Math review for test (which will be on March 7th), practice for your inquiry presentation (held on Friday) and Pioneer day this Thursday!

Happy Tuesday!

Today we started the day off with an exciting pancake eating contest and some fun school wide activities in the gym. After the spirit day games we headed back to the room to write down our spelling for the week. This week our spelling words end with a consonant and require doubling of that consonant before adding the ending.  Later on we also continued work on our novel study. During the novel study we had a chance to work on the next chapter which we read together as a class followed by a comprehension activity. The activity required students to respond to topics explored in the chapter including seasonal changes and main activities the characters did in that chapter.

Later on we continued to work on our summative. We have one more day (tomorrow) to work hard on our summatives. On Friday we will all present the projects to the class. I cannot wait to see what the students will present! Please remember, all work is to be completed at school, students have been working hard collecting research, preparing Bristol boards and presentations. Students are welcome to practice their presentations at home but all Bristol boards are to stay on campus.

In mathematics we continued to study and prepare for the math test which will be held on March 7, 2014. Unit 7 was a shorter unit and gave students a chance to explore motion geometry. In this unit we spent time looking into sliding, turning and reflecting objects on a grid. As well as exploring lines of symmetry within varying shapes and objects. Please continue to work on exploring these concepts at home with your children.

Students also went to PE, and French classes.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log and Math review for test (which will be on March 7th), spelling pages 102-103, practice for your inquiry presentation (held on Friday) and Pioneer day this Thursday!

Happy Monday!

We had an eventful day enjoying the Mountsberg Conservation Area. The students that attended learned all about the process of producing maple syrup. It was a perfect opportunity to access prior knowledge we have gained throughout the Unit of Inquiry and from our Novel Study reading. Ask your child about our great trip today.

When we returned from our trip we had a chance to continue working on our summative. Feel free to collect research at home if you'd like.

Here are some pictures from today!

Happy Friday!

Today the students started off with their weekly spelling test. This week’s words were a review of several lesson over the past few weeks. Later on in Language we also reviewed using proper tenses and how those impact the message presented in the sentence. In the afternoon we continued to work on in our Novel Study. Today we read together as a class then continued to solidify learning and comprehension through an independent activity in our Novel Study folders.

In our UOI students continued to work hard on gathering information and preparing for their presentations. In class today we had a chance to go to the portables to work at on of the computer labs. Students projects are coming along nicely! Ask your student what they did in class today to prepare their UOI summative.
This afternoon we were able to meet up with our reading buddies from Ms. Chang’s class. During that time Ms. Chang and I saw a lot of mentorship from the grade three’s.
