Good afternoon!

We had another great day today at SJA!  We began the day today with more ABC order practice during bell work time.  The students seem to be getting on very well with this concept and had a lot of fun with it today.
We reviewed what we learned about rules on Wednesday (rules are either made to keep us safe or to keep someone happy).  The children then choose a rule they are asked to follow at home and had to determine whether it was designed to keep someone safe or happy.  We had a lot of fun listening to the different rules the students came up with :)
Later today we discussed how sometimes we can make rules for ourselves and turn these rules into goals.  We read a story about a girl who made a goal of learning to figure skate, and listened to all the steps she had to take to reach that goal.  The students were then asked to create their own long term and short term goals that will be kept to review at the end of the school year.
During math we continued on with counting.  In today's session the children had to count different objects and then match them up with the corresponding numbers.
They also went to french class today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and complete the 'My Goals' worksheet if necessary.

Important information:  Next Friday, Sept. 16th is our first spirit day at SJA.  Children are asked to come to school dressed in their house colours on this date.  The three house colours are blue, green and orange.  Every student is in a house and will be asked to come to school dressed in the colours for that house.

This Monday is a gym day.  Gym days at SJA are Mondays and Wednesdays this school year.

Mme. Stella is still waiting for a few students to bring in their red duotangs for french class.  Every student has been asked to bring in 6 red duotangs (the type with with metal tabs) for french class.

A number of children in our class have been having issues with their belongings this week.  Children have been complaining their shoes don't fit, they have lace-up shoes and cannot tie them, or they are having issues with their lunch bags not working properly.  Now that a week has gone by, I would suggest over the weekend checking with your children to see if they might need to switch any of these items to help make the year easier for them.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon,

We had a great day today in our grade 1/2 class.  We started the day by working on ABC order once again and the class seemed to really grasp what we learned yesterday which was great to see!  The students also worked on an activity where they had to write about their favourite movies, books, hobbies and subjects.  Once they completed that activity they all did a presentation to the class to practice their oral communication skills and to help get to know each other better.  In math today we reviewed the concept of counting and discussed why and when we use counting in 'real-life' and then the children worked on counting activities in their Jump Math books.  The students also went to french and music today.  At the end of the day we had a school-wide house game once again where the school comes together to compete in games for house points.  It was lots of fun!

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and complete the ABC order work if necessary.

Important information:  Tomorrow is the last day to order anything form the Scholastic order that was sent home yesterday.  If you would like to purchase anything, please send in a cheque by tomorrow.

I have books posted in a list on the side of this blog.  This is not a required book list.  This list is there for you if you are ever looking for books to read at home for enjoyment with your child.  They are recommended books for a grades one - three.
Please see Mme. Stella's blog for information regarding french duotangs that need to be brought in for french class..

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We had another great day today!  We started off the say today by working on ABC order which the class seemed to really enjoy. Ask your child tonight to tell you what they learned about sorting words using ABC order.  We also read stories about animals and learned a great deal of interesting facts.  As a class we began discussing the idea of rules and we brainstormed reasons why we have rules and how they can help keep us happy and safe.  We also talked about where we see rules and why we follow them.  As a class we created a list of classroom rules that are now posted in our room.  The children also went to drama, french and P.E today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and complete the 'Bell Work' entry on ABC order.

Important information:  The children are bringing home their agendas and home folders tonight. These two items need to come back and forth DAILY and should not be kept at home.  The reading chart has an area that needs to be marked every night that indicated how many minutes of reading that has been done.  There is also a place for a parent's signature.

Please see Mme. Stella's blog for information about french duotangs that need to be brought in by our class.

I sent home Scholastic book order forms home with your child tonight.  If you are interested in purchasing anything, please send in a cheque by Friday, Sept 9th.

Have a great evening,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

It was a wonderful day today being back at SJA and seeing all the old and new faces of the 2011/12 school year.  We had a great day in our class today.  It really seemed to rush by, as a lot of things needed to be sorted out.  We had a great time discussing and reflecting on our summer vacations and we got to share and chat as a class to get to know each other better which was great.  The children also went to a quick french class today.  At the end of the day we had a school-wide house game that allowed each of the three houses at SJA to compete against each other for house points.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes.

Important information:  We do have reading tracking sheets, home folders and agendas that will be coming home with your child every night starting tomorrow.  Please keep your eye out for them.

In the morning at drop off time, your child can change their shoes and drop off their bags and coats in the gym from now on.  This system will begin tomorrow morning.

Please see Mme. Stella's blog about doutangs she needs for french class.  She is requesting each student bring in 6 red duotangs that have metal folding tabs to secure the pages.

Looking forward to a great school year,

Mrs. Nelson
