Good afternoon!

We started off the day today with our weekly spelling test.  The children are all bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight.  During language the children continued working on nouns.  We had a discussion of what a noun is (person, place or thing), reviewed their role in a sentence, and discussed how to turn singular nouns into plural nouns.  Test your child's knowledge tonight!  In our unit of inquiry the children continued their discussions of living and non-living things.  We reviewed the definitions from yesterday and compared and contrasted them.  We also began discussing three major groups of living things (1) mammals (2) reptiles (3) insects.  As a class we explored what it means to belong to each of these categories.  During math the children worked on counting money, before and after and sums and differences (grade one) and sorted various types of data (grade two)  The students also went to French class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each (including bonus),  Jump Math pages 203 - 205 (grade two), complete math worksheet (grade ones) and Cursive pages 211 - 213.

Bonjour!

I was out of the classroom for the majority of the day today at an IB event.  While I was away, the students began the day working on language.  They did a review of nouns, and worked on identifying nouns and plural nouns in a variety of sentences.  Ask your child tonight to tell you the definition of a noun! In our unit of inquiry the children began a discussion of living and non-living things.  They got into pairs and created definitions of 'living' and 'non-living' things.  The class then came together and listened to all the different definitions that the students had come up with.  They had a class discussion and came to an agreement of what it means to be a 'living' and 'non-living' thing. The completed letter and the checklist will be coming home with all students tomorrow.  During the afternoon the children worked hard on a craft which they will be bringing home with them tomorrow.  The students also went to French and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words,  and Cursive pages 207 - 209.

Good afternoon!

Our class started off the day by working in the computer lab.  The students had a lot of fun working on their mouse, keyboard and Internet skills!  During language today the children began their novel study project.   As a class we read Chapter one of Winnie The Pooh by A.A Milne.  After we completed the chapter the children all got into their novel study groups and began working on their chapter reviews.  The groups are all asked to complete a summary of the events, ask two questions about the chapter, make two predictions for the next chapter, and draw a complimenting illustration.   Ask your child tonight how their novel study went today!  In our unit of inquiry the children worked on their good copies of their letters to 'Mother Nature' thanking her for the environment.  All children completed their good copies that will not be marked with a checklist.  The completed letter and the checklist will be coming home with all students tomorrow.  During math the students worked on counting by tens, sums and differences, and counting money (grade one) and sorting and organizing various types of data (grade two).   The students also went to French and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Jump Math pages 201 - 202 (grade two), complete A Beka Math worksheet (grade one) and Cursive pages 203 - 205.

Good afternoon!

Our class started off the day by working on a writing activity.  Today's activity focused on writing adventure stories.  As a class we read a story about 4 friends who got into some trouble on their way to a parade.  We discussed the important elements of that story (character, setting, problem, solution) and then put all the elements onto a story board.  The students then had to independently create their own story boards that they turned into an adventure story.  All the children had chance to read their stories to the class which was a lot of fun!  During language today the children were introduced to our new project- a novel study.   As a class we are going to be reading Winnie The Pooh by A.A Milne, and the children are going to work in groups to complete a novel study booklet.  The children will meet at the end of each chapter to discuss the characters, setting and main events.  Eventually the whole book will be summarized in their novel study booklets, which will be assessed with a rubric.  This is a major language project for this term.  In our unit of inquiry the children worked on letters to 'Mother Nature' thanking her for the environment.  They used their brainstorms from yesterday to give them ideas of ways we use the environment, and ways we can conserve it.  The letters will be completed tomorrow and marked with a checklist.  During math the students worked on counting before and after numbers, and counting money (grade one) and breaking down and creating shapes (grade two).   The students also went to French class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Jump Math pages 198 - 199 (grade two), and Cursive pages 203 - 205.

Happy Monday!

I hope that everyone had a great weekend!  Our class started off the day by copying down the new weekly spelling words and working in spelling workbooks.  This week's spelling words are all a review of previous weeks.  All the words have already been tested, but reviews are a great way to make sure that after the test is over, the words are still able to be spelled.  During language today the children worked on a summary of their weekends in their journals and practised their cursive.   In our unit of inquiry the children worked in pairs on a brainstorming activity where they had to think up all the ways that they use the environment.  This was a way to get ideas flowing for tomorrow's activity where they are going to have to write a 'thank you' letter to the environment.  During math the students worked on making rules for sorting data (grade one) and explored lines of symmetry (grade two).  The grade ones completed their math books today which was a very exciting event!  The completed Jump Math books are coming home with all the grade ones tonight and may remain at home.  Starting tomorrow the Grade Ones will begin our second math program, A Beka Math. The students also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Jump Math pages 196 - 197, and Cursive pages 199 - 201.
