Good afternoon!

The students started off the day today with their weekly spelling test.  The marked spelling tests will be coming home with all students tonight.  I asked that all incorrectly spelled words be re-written ten times each (including the bonus word).   During our IB unit of inquiry today, we had to have a change of plans, as our sculptures were not dry and therefore were not ready to be painted.  Instead, we moved on to our next project which is a poetry project!  The students were asked to write rough copies of poems about the environment.  As a class we did a brainstorm of everything we have learned in our Sharing the Planet unit so far, and the students were asked to use some of those ideas and turn them into poems.  When we come back next week they are going to do their poem good copies, and then a painting to accompany their poetry.  In the afternoon we had an art lesson.  The students learned all about a famous Russian artist named 'Wassily Kandinsky'.  Kandinsky has a famous style of showcasing trees.  As a class we did our own version of Kandinsky trees which came out very nice!   They also went to French and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, practice Arts Night song, finish rough copy of environment poem, and locate flags for Arts Night.

I haver asked the students to being in flags they may have at home to be used during our class' Arts Night performance.  We are looking to wave flags from around the world as we sing the song.  If any families have flags at their homes that they could send in to be used for this purpose, that would be great!  I am going to start collecting flags on Monday and will have them sent back home to you as soon as our class finishes their performance.

The SJA Choir is having our next performance at Arts Night.  I hope that all students have been practising our choir song at home!  We are asking that members of the choir come to school wearing 'spring colours' for our performance.  This could mean nice spring colours, flower prints, etc.

Good afternoon!

The students started off the day today by writing fictional stories using their weekly spelling words.  I had a lot of interesting stories turn in today which was great to see!  During language today we read chapter 7 of Winnie-the-Pooh.  It was a funny chapter that the children all seemed to really enjoy.  After the reading, the students got into their novel study groups and completed their novel summaries.   During our IB unit of inquiry today, the children had a lot of fun creating their fictional animals out of clay!  They all got very involved and had a great time making a representation of the animal they have been writing about this week.  As long as they are dry, we are going to paint the animals tomorrow and will have them on display during Arts Night.  Please have a look at the pictures I have posted at the end of my posting showing their hard work.  During math today the children worked on word problems, telling time, sums and differences, and measurement.  The grade twos also had a surprise geometry review to check to see if they remember the important concepts from that unit.  They also went to French and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, practice Arts Night song and complete math worksheet.

Happy Wednesday!

We started off the day today working in the computer lab.  The students were put into pairs and given a chance to practice their keyboard, mouse and internet skills.  They always have a lot of fun with this activity!  During language the students got into their novel study groups and had a 'catch-up' period.  This was a time to go back to previous chapter to add information, illustrations, or improve proofreading.  The story is more than half-way completed now, so we want to make sure these books are perfect when they are assessed!  During our IB unit of inquiry today, the children continued working on their fictional 'hybrid animal' project that was started earlier this week.  In today's class all the students completed their good copies and are now ready to begin their sculpture in tomorrow's class.  Students have been told they can being in tools to help them mold their clay sculpture to resemble their good copy description (straws, tooth picks, toothbrushes, etc.).  During math today the children worked on measurement, telling time, sums and differences, and counting money.  They also went to French and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and complete math worksheet.

Bonjour!
I was away all day yesterday at an IB meeting in downtown Toronto learning a great deal of information to bring back to SJA. I happy to hear that all the students had nice weekends, and a lot of learning was done in our classroom while I was away.
We started off the day today with language where the children read another chapter of Winnie-the-Pooh and worked on completing their chapter summaries in their novel study groups.  The story is more than half-way completed now, so have a check-in with your child tonight to see how their novel study booklets are coming along!  During our IB unit of inquiry today, the children continued on the big project that was begun in my absence yesterday.  All students have been asked to create write-up for a fictional 'hybrid animal' that they discovered one day out on an adventure.  The children have been asked to use their knowledge of living things, basic needs, mammals, reptiles and insects to give themselves ideas for this project.  Once the write-up is completed, the students will be asked to use clay to create a replica of their animal.  This is going to take place on Thursday.  Students have been told they can being in tools to help them mold their clay sculpture of they wish (straws, tooth picks, toothbrushes, etc.).  During math today the children worked on word problems, sums and differences, and counting money.  They also went to French and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, complete math worksheet, and complete rough copy of animal write-up if necessary.
