Happy Friday!

I hope you all have enjoyed the snowy weather today as much as the children at SJA did!  We started off the day today with our weekly spelling test.  The children will be bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight.  During language today the children worked on special sounds, vowel sounds, compound words and cursive.  In our IB Unit of Inquiry we had a fun day today reviewing the tips for conserving energy that we saw yesterday in the videos we watched together.   After the review the students got into pairs and created their own skits that focused on tips to help others conserve energy.  We got to see a lot of skits with different energy-saving ideas such as riding your bike instead of driving, changing to energy efficient light bulbs, and not using extra water needlessly.  It was a fun way to complete this part of our IB unit.   We had a treat at the end of the day today and watched Charlotte's Web together with Miss. M and Miss. Chang's classes.  This was a fun way to see the characters we have been hearing so much about! The students also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, cursive page 86- 87, and Letters and Sounds page 92 - 93.

Important information:  An important package is being sent home with the youngest (or only) child in each family.  This package has information about the 2012/13 enrollment at SJA.  Please make sure to keep an eye out for this package and the important information it contains.

The SJA Gala has been scheduled for February 11th, 2012.  It begins at 6pm.  The theme for this year is 'Love Through the Ages'.  It is a great nice of dinner, dancing, silent auctions, and performances by all the classes.  Please make sure to mark this night on your calendars!  Anyone is invited to attend so please mention the event to your friends and family.

Thank you to all the families who have been making a point to read and sign your child's agenda nightly.  Most children are doing really well with this new system and I have encouraged them to keep up the good work!  Thank you for helping to keep the lines of communication open.

Have a great weekend!

Hello!

I hope that all the students that attended the You Got Dance class last night had a good time.  I know that I for one enjoyed watching the kids participate!  We started off the day today working on sentence writing.  The students had to choose 5 of their weekly spelling words and turn them into sentences for house points.  They always really enjoy this opening exercise.  In language today the children worked on special sounds, vowel sounds, picture words and cursive.  We also read our final chapter of Charlotte's Web today.  It was a great story of friendship and loyalty that the children really seemed to connect with.  After reading the final chapter the children wrote summaries in their journals about their favourite parts of the story.  In our IB Unit of Inquiry we watched a few videos about saving energy.  The children were introduced to the idea of conserving energy and were provided reasons that it is important, as well as ways to participate in conserving energy.  Ask your child tonight to tell you what they learned about global warming.  In math today the children worked on width and length (grade one) and adding and subtracting numbers by ten (grade two).  They also went to french and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive page 84- 85, math page 112 - 113, and Letters and Sounds page 90 - 91.

Bonjour!

We started off the day working on another comprehension activity.  Today we read a story about two flowers growing in a garden and the difference between them due to sun exposure.  This is still a developing skill for many of the children.  Once again, I suggest that all children make comprehension/summary questions a part of their nightly reading routine to help improve this skill at home.  They will be bringing home their marked comprehension activity with them tonight.  In language the children worked on special sounds, opposites, suffixes, and cursive.  In our IB unit of Inquiry the children returned to their pairs from yesterday and continued working on their summary of the link between energy and the environment.  This was the final work period for this task.  We also took a trip to the computer lab and the children had time to develop their computer and key board skills.  In math today the children worked on width (grade one) and adding and subtracting numbers by ten (grade two).  They also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive page 82- 83, math page 110 - 101, and Letters and Sounds page 88 - 89.

Important information:  Today is the free You Got Dance class for any students interested in participating.  The free demonstration will begin at 3:40pm and will last about an hour.  Any and all children are invited to attend for the free hour.  Please be ready to pick them up at 4:30 as after school charges will begin to accumulate shortly after the end of the class if children are not picked up.

The next Parent Guild meeting is taking place tonight (January 11th, 2012).  Please make a note of this important meeting.

All children are bringing home a  bookmark that was given to them by Polar Expressions as a 'thank you' for participating in the contest this year. All children are also bringing home a form with information on purchasing a Polar Expressions book.  This is the book where fellow students will have their work published if they were chosen.  Buying this book is optional.  Any forms and monies should be sent to the Polar Expressions address indicated on the order form.

The SJA Gala has been scheduled for February 11th, 2012.  It begins at 6pm.  More details will soon follow but please mark this important event on your calendars!

Hi there,

We started off the day working on a comprehension activity.  This is going to be a new focus of our classroom as I aim to have students' comprehension levels rise and improve.  We read a short story together today, and then the children had to re-read the story independently and answer the four corresponding questions.  I suggest that all children make comprehension/summary questions a part of their nightly reading routine to help improve this skill at home as well.  They will be bringing home their marked comprehension activity with them tonight.  In language the children also worked on root words, suffixes, picture words and cursive.  In our IB unit of Inquiry we read a book called 'The Kids Solar Energy Book' that focused on the importance of solar energy.  It also highlighted some of the environmental problems with other sources of energy.   Ask your child tonight to share some of these interesting facts with you.  After reading, the children got into pairs and worked on summarizing the importance of energy in the environment.  In math today the children worked on length (grade one) and combining numbers to make ten (grade two).  They also went to french and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive page 80- 81, math page 108 - 109, and Letters and Sounds page 86 - 87.

Important information:  Tomorrow after school there is going to be a FREE demonstration class offered by the You Got Dance coaches.  This is for any student who is/may be interested in signing up for the new dance class being offered at SJA.  Tomorrow's class is free and can be taken by any students who would like to see what the class is going to be about.  The free demonstration will begin at 3:40pm tomorrow.  Please email/call Mr. Browning for more information about tomorrow's session.

The next Parent Guild meeting which is taking place on January 11th, 2012.  Please make a note of this important meeting.

A month or so ago our class submitted poems to the Polar Expressions contest.  The winners for the contest have their poems/stories published in a book.  We are lucky enough to have winner selected from our class that are going to have their poems published in the Polar Expressions book!  Please keep an eye out for a letter with the winning notification in your child's home folder tonight.

Good afternoon!

It was nice to get back to our classroom today after a weekend away!  We started off the day working on spelling.  The children copied down the new weekly spelling words and worked in their spelling books.  We read another chapter of Charlotte's Web today which the students really enjoyed.  In our IB unit of Inquiry we read two books about energy that focused on the link between energy and the environment.  The children learned a lot of great facts about energy and the environment including- food chains, coal miners, fossil fuels, solar energy, drilling for oil, wind mills, and the power of sunlight.  Ask your child tonight to share some of these interesting facts with you!  In math today the children began working on length (grade one) and combining numbers to make ten (grade two).  They also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive page78- 79 and math page 106 - 107, and Spelling Workbook page 65 - 68 (grade one) page 61 - 64 (grade two).

Important information:  A form went home with the students on Friday regarding the next Parent Guild meeting which is taking place on January 11th, 2012.  Please make a note of this important meeting.

The SJA Gala has been scheduled for February 11th, 2012.  It begins at 6pm.  More details will soon follow but please mark this important event on your calendars!

I want to remind all parents that agendas should be read and signed each and every night.  Students will get stickers and house points for agendas that have been read and signed.  Please help me to make sure that homework is being completed and important information is being communicated.

Please speak with your child to make sure they have all the supplies they need for class.  Many children have used their pencils up, and lost/broken/used up their erasers and sharpeners.  This is causing confusion and a great deal of lost work time in the classroom as children search and borrow these item from each other.  Please take a moment to speak with your child over the weekend to get them re-stocked for the new year.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
