Happy Friday!

We started off the day today with the weekly spelling tests. The children were tested on their spelling words and will be bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight. In language today they worked on prefixes, special sounds, root words, and cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we continued discussing Canadian aboriginals.  We reviewed their love of art and culture and spoke about why they had such a love of art.  We looked through books to see more real life examples of aboriginal art and the materials they used.  The students then created their own works of aboriginal art using 'nature' colours.  We spent more time today practicing our routine for the upcoming Gala.  The routine is really coming along and the students are doing a great job!  The students also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 108 - 109, and cursive page 106 - 107.

Important information:  The candy sale will be taking place again on Monday at second recess.  Candy is for sale for 50 cents a piece.

Please mark Feb. 11th down for the upcoming SJA Gala.  The theme is going to be 'Love Through the Ages'.  This is a fun night for all friends and families to attend!  Ticket information has gone home with each family.  Please make sure to have a look for this valuable information and to send back ticket information and money to Mrs. Brasil as soon as possible.

Please see my posting from last week with information regarding the Khan Academy.  This is a fun online math program that can be used to practice math skills at home.  The children earn points and badges which they seem to really enjoy!  It is also a way to help develop computer skills which is another important skill for the children to be developing at this age.

Have a great weekend,

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today by working on sentence writing.  The children were asked to use their weekly spelling words and turn them into sentences for house points.  They always have a great deal of fun with this activity.   In language today we also worked on prefixes, special sounds, syllables, and cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we began working on our first line of inquiry 'the art forms of local culture, both past and present'.  Today we discussed a brief history of Canada's aboriginal people- who they were, where they lives, and what their lives were like.  We then focused this discussion on the art and culture of Canadian aboriginals.  We read a book that gave examples of aboriginal dances, stories, carvings, painting, and rock scratchings.  The children found this to be very interesting. They then wrote about what they learned in their journals.  Ask your child tonight to share something they learned with you!  We also spent some time in drama practicing our performance for the upcoming drama.  In math today the students worked on measurement and distance (grade one) and identifying the cores of patterns (grade two).  The students also went to french and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 106 - 107, math page 128 - 129, and cursive page 104 - 105.

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on a writing activity.  The children were introduced to mapping.  We spent some time discussing the real life uses of mapping, and situations where mapping is needed.  We looked over some real life maps together, and I drew an example of a map for the students to view.   The students were then asked to brainstorm ideas for a map, and create their own map using the important elements we discussed- labels, a compass, a title, etc.  This was a fun activity that they seemed to enjoy.  Please ask your child tonight to tell you when they did for their map.  In language today we also worked on opposites, finishing sentences and prefixes.  In our IB unit of inquiry today the children brainstormed all the different types of art they could think of.  This was an activity to show the students how versatile and creative forms of art can be.  We then viewed a PowerPoint presentation that had many different forms of art featured.  The children had to compare their brainstorming list with the PowerPoint list for house points.    In math today the students worked on length and estimating (grade one) and creating patterns (grade two).  The students also went to french and P.E class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 104 - 105, math page 126 - 127, and cursive page 102 - 103.

Happy Monday!

We started off the day copying down the new weekly spelling words and working in spelling workbooks.  The students worked on short 'e' words (grade one) and 'le' words (grade two).  The marked spelling tests will be coming home with all the students tonight.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we started our new unit 'People Use Art Forms to Express Their Cultures'.  We had a discussion of what art means to you.  We discussed how people view art differently, and how different cultures can have different opinions of what art is.  The students all provided a definition of what art is, and drew a picture to illustrate it.  We also continued reading The Tale of Despereaux which the children are really enjoying.  In math today the students worked on length (grade one) and identifying pattern cores (grade two).  The students also went to french and P.E class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Spelling Workbooks page 74 - 76 (grade one) page 70 - 72 (grade two), math page 122 - 123, and cursive page 98 - 99.

Elliot's class.  Hopefully we will receive some replies!

Candy can now be bought for 50 cents a piece at first recess.  This started today.

Our next casual day is taking place this Wednesday.  If you have paid your money for the year, your child may come to school in whatever casual clothes they wish.

We started our fourth IB unit for this year today.  The theme of this unit is 'How We Express Ourselves'.  Every IB unit has a central idea, which acts as the objective for learning for the unit.  The central idea for our next unit is 'People Use Art Forms to Express Their Culture'.  In order to reach this central idea, 3 lines of inquiry have been developed to help direct us towards meeting the central idea.  The three lines of inquiry for this unit are (1) the art forms of local cultures both past and present (2) the art forms of various international cultures (3) how art is used for expression and communication.  It was a great day today and I look forward to see the fun that is had through the rest of the unit!

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
