Bonjour!

We started off the day with our weekly spelling tests.  The marked spelling tests will be coming home with each student tonight.  After spelling the students worked on language where they practiced root words, suffixes, special sounds and vowel sounds.  They also practiced their cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry the students completed their seasons wheels.  The wheels turned out great and were full of a great deal of important facts, vocabulary and information that has been learned in this unit!  We also began reading a new book together as a class- Charlotte's Web.  At the end of the day we had time to continue watching The Water Horse, which was a nice way to lead into the weekend.  They also went to drama class today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, Letters and Sounds pages 60 - 61 and cursive pages 48 - 49.

Important information:  Please see my posting from earlier in the week for links to this year's Christmas choir song.  If your child is in the choir and would like extra time to practice at home, these links will be useful.

In my post yesterday I also gave links to cursive worksheets you can print off and use at home.  Starting on December 1st, all writing that is done must be completed in cursive.  If your child is finding issues with any cursive letters, please use these printable worksheets as a way for them to practice at home.

Report cards are coming home with every child tonight.  These report cards are different than previous years due to our new IB status.  Please take the time to review the report cards, and fill out the section entitled 'Parent's Comments.  This is a section for you to provide SJA with feedback about the curriculum, the assessments, and the new method of reporting.  Please keep your eye out for the report cards tonight!

On Monday we are beginning our next IB unit of inquiry-  How the World Works.  There is a central idea that will guide the learning in this unit.  The central idea is 'Everything that happens is a result of using some sort of energy'.  There are three lines of inquiry that will help us direct our learning in this unit, (1) type of energy (2) uses of energy (3) energy and the environment.  I am very excited to begin this new unit with the students on Monday!

Have a safe weekend,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

The students began the day writing sentences using their weekly spelling words.  They got house points for completing their work which always makes an activity a lot of fun!  After sentence writing the students moved on to language where they worked on finishing sentences, picture words, special sounds and identifying vowels.  The students also worked on their cursive writing.  During our IB unit of inquiry we continued working on the seasons wheels. Almost everyone was able to complete their rough copy fact sheet and move on to their good copies, which was good to see.  Tomorrow is the final period to work on the seasons wheels.  They will be coming home completed and assessed tomorrow night.  In math today the students worked on problems and puzzles (grade one) and number lines (grade two).  They also went to music and french classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words for tomorrow's spelling test, Letters and Sounds page 58 - 59, cursive page 46 - 47, and math pages 82 (grade one) and 81 - 82 (grade two).

Important information:  I informed the students today that in one week's time (December 1st) all writing that is done in our classroom will have to be done in cursive.  We have completed our cursive practice for almost every letter, so it is definitely time we put this hard work to use in our classroom.  I have explained to the students that they now have a week to become comfortable working in cursive.  If you would like to provide additional cursive practice at home to better ready your child, you can find cursive sheets to print online at http://www.kidzone.ws/cursive/index.htm.  Just search for the letter(s) that your child wants to practice and print out the corresponding worksheet.

Please see my posting from yesterday with the information for the choir song and lyrics.  If you child is in the choir and would like to have additional practice, please feel free to use the sites I posted last night.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day working in the computer lab.  The children worked on their keyboard and mouse skills which they really enjoyed!  Upon returning to class we worked on phonics.  The children explored special sounds, opposites, picture words and completed cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we continued working on our seasons wheel.  Some students felt they were ready to move on to their good copies, where some students are finishing their final facts on their rough copies.  I was stressing the importance of proofreading today, especially on important assignments such as this.  Taking your time and reviewing your work before you hand it in to be assessed is an important skill that our students will use throughout their lifetime, so please help me reiterate this tonight at home.  During math today the students worked on order and placement (grade one) and number lines (grade two).  They also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 44 - 45, math pages 80 - 81 (grade one) and Letters and Sounds pages 56 - 57.

Important information:  Please see my posting from last night to see a copy of the rubric that is going to be used to assess the seasons wheel.  Each student has been given a list of vocabulary words that I expect to see inputted into each season appropriately.  We spoke about the rubric in length today, but it also helps for them to review at at home.

If your child is in choir and would like to practice this year's Christmas concert song, you can find the song played at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5W8VlUE88U and you can also find a print out of the lyrcis at http://www.lyricsmania.com/its_the_most_wonderful_time_of_the_year_lyrics_amy_grant.html.

Just as a reminder, the last day of school before the Christmas holidays is on December 16th.  This day is a half day which means that the children will be ready to be picked up at noon.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on proofreading and sentence writing.  The students had to find the mistakes in various sentences and edit them to make them correct.  They had a lot of fun completing this challenge for house points.  The students also worked on a reflection writing activity today that is going to be used as part of their first term report card.  In our IB unit of inquiry we continued working on the rough copy of our seasons wheel.  The students worked hard on reviewing what we have learned in this unit to be included in their final assignment.  During math today the students worked on order and placement (Grade one) and adding and subtraction (Grade two).  The students also went to music and french class.

Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 42 - 43 and math pages 78 - 79 (grade one) 77 - 78 (grade two).

Important information:  This is a reminder that the last day of school before the Christmas holidays is on December 16th.  This day is a half day, which means the children will be dismissed at noon.

Please take a look at the french, music, P.E and drama blogs regularly as they often have information that is important to our class.

I have an example of the rubric for the seasons wheel posted below.  The students are going to begin working on their good copies tomorrow in class, and I wanted to make sure to share with you what they have been doing and what is going to be expected of them for this assignment.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

It was nice to get back together after a weekend away.  The students started off the day today working on spelling.  They copied down their new weekly spelling words and worked in their spelling books.  During our IB unit of inquiry the child began their final assignment of this unit.  We are going to be creating a seasons wheel, with each season being represented on a section of the wheel and all the information gathered about the season being listed. Today the children began their brainstorming where they listed off everything they could remember learning about for each season.  During math today the children worked on estimating (grade one) and addition (grade  two).  They also went to french, drama and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and math page 77 (grade one) page 76 (grade two).
