Good afternoon!

We started off the day today by having our poetry competition.  Our class joined together with Mrs. Haag's grade three class for the event.  We chose four winners from each of our classes, and I am happy to announce that representing our class at Wednesday's school-wide competition will be Jessica, Shannon, Temi and Alex!  Congratulations to our winners! Everyone did a really great job today.  The rubrics for how the poems were assessed will be going home with your child tonight.  We continued on with our day by having our weekly spelling test and working in our spelling books.  The marked spelling tests will be going home with your child tonight.  During social studies we continued on with our unit, Canada and the World.  We looked deeper into the characteristics that make up Canada, spoke about direction, and discussed some of the geographical landmarks that are found in different areas of our country.  The children also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each.

Important information:  Tomorrow is a P.D Day so the children will not be required to come to school.  Monday is Family Day as well, which makes this weekend a four day long weekend.

The children that have been selected as the winners for the poetry competition should use this weekend to perfect their performance for Wednesday's competition.  Please continue to work on voice, eye contact, passion and pacing.  The rubrics that are being sent home should act as a good indicator of what is being sought after in the competition.

Have a great long weekend!

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day working in our language books.  The children practiced creating sentences, proofreading, root words, special sounds and 'may' versus 'can'.  During math time the children practiced counting by twos and odd and even numbers (grade one) and had a review of time, temperature, and money (grade two).  The children also were given a math review sheet for the unit test that is taking place next Wednesday.  In the afternoon we read another chapter of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and the children had a chance to work with their language groups to review the chapter.  The children also went to french and drama classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice spelling words for tomorrow's spelling test, practice poetry for tomorrow's poetry competition, Letters and Sounds page 78 - 79 and complete book study Chapter 6.

Important information:  Tomorrow is our in-class poetry competition.  All children are going to be asked to recite their poems in front of the class.  I will choose the winners from this competition to go on and compete in the school-wide competition on the 23rd.

Wednesday, February 23rd is our next math unit test.  The children are bringing home a unit review sheet with them tonight.  It does not have to be completed in full tonight.  It is due on Tuesday.

This Friday is a P.D Day.  The children are not required to come to school.  Also, this Monday is Family Day so the children are not required to come to school.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

The Gala was a great success this past Saturday night!  It was great to see all the families and friends come out for the big event.  I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.
In today's class we started off the day by recording our new weekly spelling words and working in our spelling books.  During math we continued working on the last few pages in this unit.  The children worked on number sentences (grade one) and uses subtraction to solve word problems (grade two).  During language the children worked on the special sounds that words make, the different sounds that 'tion' makes, syllables and root words.  In today's class we also had our Valentine's Day party in the afternoon where some of the children handed out Valentine cards and we shared snacks and listened to music.  The children also went to french and art classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, practice poetry, Letters and Sounds pages 76 - 77.

Important information:  This Thursday (February 17th) we are having our in class poetry competition to decide who is going to represent our class in the school-wide competition.  Please make sure your child continues to practice their poem with enthusiasm and passion every night.

Next Wednesday (February 23rd) our class is having our next math test on the Addition and Subtraction unit.  A review sheet will be coming home with your child near the end of the week to aid them in their at home review.  We will also be doing chapter reviews in class to make sure they are all well prepared to excel on this test.

A reminder this this Friday is a P.D day at St. Jude's.  This means that the students will not be required to come to school that day.  Monday is also a holiday, as it is Family Day.  So there will be a four-day weekend for all students.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
