Good afternoon!

We started off the day today with our weekly spelling tests.  The marked spelling tests will be coming home with each student tonight.  We then moved on to language where the children worked on special sounds, root words, suffixes and cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry today the children worked in groups to create seasonal trees.  Each group was given a blank template of a tree, and were assigned a season.  The students had to use their knowledge of seasons to decorate their tree accordingly.  We had a visual today as well where the children watched a video about the 6 Pillars of Character, where they learned about important character traits and saw examples of people being trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair and caring .  After they watched the video they wrote a response about it in their journals.  They also went to drama and french classes today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, and cursive pages 40 - 41.

Important information:  A drama form went home last night informing parents about the upcoming Christmas concert.  Mrs. Deras asks that all parents review the form and send it back signed as soon as possible.

Please see my blog from earlier this week with links to the songs and lyrics for the choir song that the children are singing for the Christmas concert this year.

The last day of school before the Christmas holidays is December 16th. This day is a half day which means that the students will be ready to be picked up at noon.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on our Polar Express submissions.  Every class at SJA submits work by each child to be considered for the Polar Express writing contest.  Our class is submitting the seasons poems that we wrote last week.  Along with the poem, each child also has to submit an auto biography, which is what we worked on completing this morning.  During language the children worked on special sounds, compound words, vowel sounds, finishing sentences and cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry the children got back into their groups and they turned the rough copies of their 'Life Without the Sun' stories into good copies.  As a group they also added illustrations to compliment the story.  We also went and had reading buddies with Ms. Chang's 4/5 class.  In math today the children worked on estimating (grade one) and missing numbers (grade two).  Mr. Murano was away today so the children did not have music, but they did go to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, math pages 75 - 76 (grade one) and 74 - 74 (grade two), and cursive page 38 - 39.

Important information:  Please see my posting from last night for links to the songs and lyrics for the song being sung by the choir at this year's Christmas concert.

The last day of school this year before the Christmas holidays is December 16th.  This day is a half day which means the students will be ready to be picked up at noon.

Ninara has lost his SJA vest at school today.  If your child accidentally brought home a SJA vest labeled with Ninara's name, please send it back to school with them as soon as possible.

Tomorrow is the last day to order pictures if you would like any from the original picture day.  If you are ordering, all forms and funds need to be in by tomorrow.  You are also asked to bring back the photo negatives by tomorrow as well, even if you are not ordering pictures.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on sentence writing and proofreading.  The students have come a long way with this valuable skill which has been great to see!  During language the children worked on picture words, special sounds and identifying double consonants, as well as cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry today the children completed a review exercise where they had to list things that are representative of each season, and they also worked in groups to write a story from the perspective of a plant, animal or human about what life would be like without the sun.  During math today the children worked on closer and further (grade one) and missing numbers (grade two).  They also went to music and french classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and cursive page 36 - 37.

Important information:  Due to absences in the class, we did not write the math re-test today as planned.  The math re-test will take place tomorrow at recess instead.

If you would like to purchase any pictures from the original picture day, the form and money needs to be sent in by this Friday, November 18th.

We had a great day getting back to school after a long weekend away!  The students started off the day copying down their new weekly spelling words and working in their spelling books.  During our IB unit of inquiry we began a discussion about the sun.  We discussed how we use it, why it is so important, and how it is also essential to plants and animals.  The students then worked in groups to see how many uses for the sun they could come up with in a brainstorm.  During math today the children worked on subtraction (grade one) and missing numbers (grade two).  They also watched a movie about the ways that Christmas is celebrated in different countries.  It is hoped that this will help the students become more knowledgeable and open-minded, which are two important IB Learner Profile characteristics.  They also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and spelling workbook pages 42 - 44 (grade one), 38 - 40 (grade two).

Important information:  Tomorrow is the math re-test for those students who missed the test last week, or that scored 84% or lower.

Tomorrow is picture re-take day.  This is available to any children who need to re-take their pictures.

Any families that would like to purchase pictures from the original picture day, must send in the form and the money by this Friday.
