Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day by having our weekly spelling test.  The marked tests will be going home with your child tonight.  The children also reviewed their spelling words and practiced their proofreading skills in their spelling books.  In math the children worked on subtraction problems,  word problems and sorting money (grade one) and counted by tens, reviewed counting money, and did word problems (grade two).  During language we continued working on our novel study of the book, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.  We started chapter three today and the children began their group discussions of this chapter.  The children also went to drama and french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice poetry, re-write incorrect spelling words 10 times each, math pages 103 - 104 and finish book study chapter three.

Important information:  The poetry competition in our class is going to take place on the 17th of February. This is when each member of the class will recite their poem, and three winners will be chosen to compete in the school-wide competition.  Remember, 50% of the grade is the memorization and 50% of the grade is the voice and passion for the poem.

Next Saturday night (February 12th) is our Gala night. The children have been working hard to perfect their performances for that evening. I hope everyone will be available to come and watch the show!

Please see Mrs. Deras' blog about the upcoming Valentine's Day play. Many of the children in our class need to spend more time practicing their lines for the play to ensure they are going to be able to do their best job next weekend.

Have a good weekend!

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone enjoyed their impromptu day off in the snow yesterday!  We came back to school and started off the day by working on language.  The children were asked to complete sentences, identify the special sounds in words, worked with the ending 'ful', and present and past tense.  During math we began exploring the idea of trial and error (grade one) and continued practicing counting by tens (grade two).  We had history today where the children read about the Aryans of India.  They heard about the story of Shiva and Ganga and how the Ganges River was thought to be formed by Hindus.  The children also went to music, french and drama class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice spelling words for tomorrow's math test, practice poetry, practice Valentine's Day play, and Letters and Sounds page 69 -70.

Important information:  The rest of the children presented their culture projects in class today.  The marked rubrics will be going home with them tonight.

Please have a look around your house to see if you have any fake swords and white sheets that can be used for togas.  Mrs. Deras would like these to be brought in as soon as possible to be used for our class' play.

Scholastic book order forms are due tomorrow if anyone is interested in purchasing something.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day by working in our cursive books.  The children were asked to describe pictures in their books, and answer various questions using complete sentences.  In math the children worked on shapes and calendars (grade one) and graphing, patterning and thousands place (grade two).  During language the children continued on with their novel study.  Today we had the final work period to complete the reviews of chapter one and two.  The children also went to music, french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice spelling words, practice Valentine's Day play, cursive page 79 - 80, math page 83 - 84, complete chapter one and two book review.

Important information:  The children are all bringing home the Valentine's Day script with them.  Mrs. Deras would like every student to take some time to practice memorizing their lines for the play.  As you know the Gala is quickly approaching (February 12th) and we want to make sure that everyone gives their best performance!  Mrs. Deras is also making a call for togas and fake swords that can be used for our class' play.  If you have any of these items please send them in.

I hope all families have bought their tickets for the Gala to see our performance!

The chapter reviews are being sent home for those students who did not finish them in class time.  We have had a great deal of time to work on the summaries in groups, and have read and re-read the two chapters they have been asked to summarize.  The completion of the summaries should be a fairly simple and speedy task for them to complete at home.

Tomorrow is pizza day.

Good luck in the snow tonight!

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day by recording the new weekly spelling words and working in our spelling books.  The children then worked on addition stories, and practiced counting by tens during math.  We learned that to add 10 to any two digit number, all you had to do was add 1 to the tens place.  This is a very easy way of counting by tens that should not require any finger counting.  Ask your child tonight to add ten to any number using this technique!  In language the children worked on sentence construction and opposites (grade one) and letter writing, and prefixes (grade two).  We also continued on with our literature circles and furthered the discussions on the chapters we have read to date in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.  The children also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes, practice spelling words, practice poetry, Langauge page 80 - 81.

Important information: Pizza day is happening this Wednesday.

Progress reports are going home shortly.  Expect to see them on February 10th.

Please make sure to have a look at the Gala flyer that was emailed and sent home.  It has important information about the Gala which is happening on the 12th.  It is going to be a great night!

Mrs. Deras has requested that students begin bringing in fake swords (if you have them) that will be used for the Valentine's in Venice play.  Also, our class will be required to wear togas during this play.  So if you have a white sheet that can be used as a toga, please send it in with your child as soon as possible.  Any questions, please contact Mrs. Deras.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
