Bonjour!

We had a great morning today practicing our Christmas concert as a school.  Today was our first dress rehearsal and it was nice to see everyone coming together in their costumes.  Please make sure that if you have not sent the angel costume in today that you do so next week so they are all here and ready to go.  In the afternoon the children had their spelling test.  The marked spelling tests will be coming home with the students tonight.  In language the children worked on special spunds, opposites and finishing sentences.  We also read another chapter of Charlotte's Web.  In math today the children worked on matching patterns (grade one) and word problems with subtracting (grade two).  We also completed a comprehension activity based on the William Won't You Wash Your Hands story from yesterday.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, Letters and Sounds page 74 - 75 and math page 98 (grade 1 & 2).

Important information: Our  grade 1/2 class is dressing as angels for the night of the concert and needs to be wearing white, silver or gold with wings and a halo.  Wings and halos can be purchased or be home-made.  We had our first dress rehearsal today.  Next week we are going to be having rehearsals everyday as well.  If your child has not brought their costume please make sure they bring it in on Monday.

Children do not have to wear their choir costumes to school for the rest of the dress rehearsals.  But they will have to wear it to school on the night of the concert to sing in the choir.

I am going to be keeping the angel costumes here at school until the day of the performance.  This way Mrs. Deras and I can be assured that every student will have a costume ready to go for the night of the concert.

If your child is in the SJA choir, they must also have a choir outfit which is a red top and black pants.  Girls have the option of wearing red dresses if they prefer.  I sent home a form with the children  on Tuesday explaining the costumes for the choir.  These costumes should be worn to school the night of the concert, and then the choir students will change into their other costumes to perform with their class.  They do not need to have the choir outfit ready at the dress rehearsal, but must have them for the night of the concert.

In our class the following students are part of the choir:  Mishal, Ninara, Emerald, Zuri, Sofia, Seanna, Angela and Taha.

Please plan at being at the school at approximately 6:30pm the night of the concert to get the children ready and organized , as it is beginning at 7pm sharp.

We are going to be having a class Christmas party on the 16th.  If you would like to send in any treats with your child please feel free.

Tuesday, December 13th is the next casual day.  If your child has paid their casual money for the year they can come dressed out of uniform.

Friday, December 16th is a red/green spirit dress up day.  All children may come to school on Friday, December 16th dressed in red/green and are not required to wear uniforms.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Nelson

Bonjour!

I had a great time meeting with all the parents last night!  I hope everyone found the night as interesting and informative as I did.  We started off the day today working on sentences.  The students were asked to create their own sentences using their weekly spelling words for house points.  In language today we worked on finishing setences, special sounds, and we read a story together about a boy who doesn't like to wash his hands.  The children are bringing home their own copy of the story with them tonight that they may keep at home.  In our IB unit of inquiry today the children wrote a quiz about solar energy and the food chain.  They were asked to explain the link between the sun, plants, and cows.  Ask your child tonight to tell you about it!In math today the children worked on repeating patterns (grade one) and subtraction (grade two).  We also had another whole-school concert rehearsal today which has really gotten everyone excited about performing next week.  The students also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and math pages 96 - 97 (grade 1 &2).

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on computers.  We worked on the school laptops for a change and the children had a lot of fun learning how to navigate them!  In language the children worked on rhyming words, special sounds and completed sentences using picture words.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we read a story about life without the sun, and discussed how all living things would be affected without the energy from the sun.  We discussed the food chain in detail today.  Ask your child to explain the food chain to you tonight!  During math today the children worked on identifying the core of patterns and altering patterns (grade one) and number sentences (grade two).  They also went to french, P.E and drama classes.

Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 70 - 71, math pages 94 - 95 (grade 1 & 2), and cursive page 62 - 63.

Good afternoon!

We started off the day correcting and editing sentences for house points.  This valuable skill is really coming along which has been great to see!  During language the children worked on syllables, picture words, special sounds and practicing cursive.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we read a book about the importance of the sun, and discussed how the sun is the primary part of our food chain.  Ask your child tonight to share with you what they learned about the food chain.  We also discussed how too much energy from the sun can cause a drought, and we looked at pictures of droughts from around the world.  In math the children practiced reading patterns (grade one) and subtracting with number lines (grade two).  They also went to music and french classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Letters and Sounds page 68 - 69, math pages 92 - 93 (grade 1 & 2), and cursive pages 60 - 61.

Important information:  This Friday is going to be our first school-wide dress rehearsal.  All children must have their full costumes ready to go for Friday.  You may either send them to school dressed in their costumes, or they may bring it in a bag and change at school.

Our class is required to dress as angel's for the Christmas concert this year.  The children are asked to wear white, gold or silver.  In my post yesterday I stated that wings and halos are optional, but this is not the case.  WING AND HALOS ARE REQUIRED FOR EACH STUDENT.  Mrs. Deras has found wings and halos at Party Packagers for $4.99 each and has suggested this as a place to find them if they need to be purchased.  Tin foil, headbands and felt also works if you would like to make them at home.  Please speak to Mrs. Deras if you need more information or check the drama blog.  Children must have these costumes for Friday's dress rehearsal.

Children who are in the choir are asked to wear black pants and a red top for the Christmas concert.  Girls may also wear red dresses if they prefer.  Children in the choir should come to school dressed in their choir costumes the night of the concert, and then will be changing into their class costumes the night of the concert as the choir is performing first.

The days are getting colder and the children are spending 40 minutes a day outside at recesses.  Please make sure your children are coming to school dressed appropriately with hats, scarves and gloves.

The last day of school is on the 16th.  This is a half day.  Children will be ready for dismissal between 11:30 and 12:00.  After school charges will begin at 12:00 that day.

We will be having a class party on the 16th.  If your child would like to bring in any treats for the class that will be great.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day working on spelling.  The students copied down their new weekly spelling words and worked in their spelling workbooks.  The spelling lists this week are a review and are all words that have been studied in the past.  This is a good way to check to make sure they after a word has been tested, the knowledge remains.  As a class we read another two chapters of Charlotte's Web today which the students are really enjoying!  In our IB unit of inquiry today we reviewed what we have learned so far about solar energy, and the children worked in pairs to brainstorm lists of the pros and cons of using solar energy.  During math the children worked on identifying and creating patterns (grade one) and subtracting using a number line (grade two).  They also went to drama, P.E and french classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 58 - 59, math pages 90 - 91, and spelling workbook pages 53 - 56 (grade one) pages 49 - 52 (grade two).

Important information:  I am still missing a few report card comments.  Please remember that SJA would like the final page of the report card to be filled out under the section called 'Parent's Comments'.  This section should come back to school to be photocopied for our records.  You will have the original copy sent back to you the same day for your own records.  Please send the completed report card in with your child as soon as possible.

This Wednesday is Parent/Teacher Interview night.  Your child is going to be bringing home information tonight regarding your designated interview time slot.  Please have a look at the sheet tonight to see what time we are going to be meeting.

Next Friday, December 16th is the last day of school before the holidays.  The school day ends at noon that day.  This means that after-school charges will begin at noon.

On Friday, December 16th we are going to be having a class Christmas party.  If your child would like to bring in any snacks or treats that day please feel free to send them in :)

For this year's Christmas concert, our class is going to be dressed as angels.  Mrs. Deras has requested that all children come dressed in silver, white or gold.  If anyone happens to have angel wings or a halo at home, your child may wear those items as well, but it is not mandatory.  Please see Mrs. Deras' blog for more information.  Our first school-wide dress rehearsal is taking place THIS FRIDAYPlease make sure your child has their costumes fully ready to go for Friday.  They may come dressed in their costumes or bring it in a bag to change into.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
