Good afternoon!

We started off the day today by having our weekly spelling tests.  The students will be bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight.  In language today the children worked on root words, suffixes, finishing sentences and syllables.  During our IB unit of inquiry today we continued exploring solar energy.  We read a book about the energy from the sun and then the children worked on identifying the pros and cons of solar energy.  Ask your child tonight to tell you what they learned!  We also read another chapter of Charlotte's Web today and the children wrote a chapter summary in their journals about what they heard and thought about the chapter.  At the end of the day we had a chance to finish watching The Water Horse!  They also went to drama and french classes today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each.

Important information:  The last day of school is on December 16th.  This day is a half day which means that after-school charges will begin at noon.

I am still missing a few report card comments.  Please remember to fill out the parent's comments section of the report card and send it back to school.  We will make a copy and the original report card will be sent promptly back to you.

If you are interested in having a parent/teacher interview with me or any other of your child's teachers, please send back the interview preference form asap.

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon!

It was nice to get back to school today.  I was off with a migraine yesterday which is why there was not a blog posting.  Today we started off the day with sentence writing.  The students were asked to choose 5 of their weekly spelling words and turn them into sentences.  In language today the children worked on root words, suffixes, rhyming words and finishing sentences, as well as cursive writing.  In our Unit of Inquiry today we read a book about the Sun and ways that we use the Sun's energy.  The students were very interested in the discussion we had about greenhouses.  Ask them tonight to tell you what they learned!  We read another chapter of Charlotte's Web today and the children wrote a response in their journals.  They were asked to answer two questions - (1) What did you learn about Charlotte today?  (2)  Do you agree with Charlotte eating bugs?  Why or why not?  Some students must complete these questions for homework.  In math the students continued working on identifying pattern cores (grade one) and subtracting using a number line (grade two).  They also went to french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words for tomorrow's test, cursive page 56 - 57, math page 88 - 89, and finish journal response if necessary.

Important Information:  Today was the first day that we began 'all-cursive-writing' in our classroom.  As of today onwards, only cursive writing will be accepted in our classroom.

There was a problem with our photocopier/printer today.  This meant I was not able to distribute December's reading chart.  Please record your child's reading on a scrap piece of paper at home for now, and they can transfer their record onto the proper reading chart as soon as it comes home.

The last day of school is on December 16th.  This is a half day where the students will be dismissed at noon.  This means that from noon - 6pm after school care charges will accrue.

Please make sure to send back your parent/teacher interview request forms if you are interested in having a face-to-face meeting with me or any other of your child's teachers on December 7th.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today with a writing assessment.  The students were asked to write about rules they follow outside at recess and draw a picture to go with it.  This is an official assessment from the 'Ontario Writing Assessment' guide and will help identify strengths and weaknesses in writing.  In language today the students worked on syllables, vowel sounds, suffixes, root words, and cursive writing.  In our IB unit of inquiry the children worked on a review and reflection from our last unit.  Each student had to identify their favourite part of the unit, and give an example of how they acted like an 'Inquirer' throughout the unit.  We also continued discussing energy and read a book about how to harness energy from the sun.  In math today the children continued identifying pattern cores (grade one) and completing number patterns (grade two).  They also went to music and french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 52 - 52, and Letters and Sounds page 62 - 63.

Important information:  Beginning this Thursday, children will only be allowed to use cursive writing in the classroom.  Please use the cursive website I have previously posted for links to online worksheets that can be printed out for at-home practice.

Our new report cards have a section for parent comments.  SJA requests that this section gets completed, signed, and sent back to school as soon as possible so that a copy can be made for our records.  The original report card will be sent back to you right away to be kept at home for your records once we have made a copy.

Scholastic book order forms went home with your child last night.  If you would like to order anything please send the completed form with a cheque by this Friday.

Tomorrow is a casual day at SJA.  If your child has paid their money they may come to school dressed in the casual clothes of their choice.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

It was great to get back to school after a weekend away!  We started off the day working on spelling.  The students copied down their new weekly spelling words and worked in their spelling workbooks.  After spelling the children worked on their cursive writing in order to become nicely prepared for Thursday when all writing that is done in the classroom will be completed in cursive writing.  We continued reading Charlotte's Web today and the children wrote a summary in their journals about Wilbur's escape off the farm.  Ask your child tonight to tell you about it.  In our IB unit of inquiry today we started our brand new unit of inquiry.  In this unit 'How The World Works' we are investigating how everything we do is a result of using some sort of energy.  In today's class we reviewed what we know about energy , and ways that we use energy.  In math today the children began our next unit on patterning (grade one) and number patterns (grade two).  They also went to french, drama and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, spelling workbooks page 50 - 52 (grade one) page 46 - 48 (grade two), cursive page 50 - 51 and complete journal entry if necessary.

Important information:  This Wednesday is the next casual day at SJA.  If your child has paid their money, they may come to school dressed in casual clothes of their choice.

Please see my postings from last week regarding a website that can be used to print off cursive worksheets at home.  Beginning this Thursday, December 1st, all writing that is done in our classroom will be requested in cursive.  If your child is feeling nervous about a particular cursive letter, or would like to practice beforehand to increase their comfort, please use these sites as a tool to find cursive writing worksheets.

Report cards went home on Friday.  Please keep your eye out for the reports if you haven't seen them already.  There is a section at the end for parent's comments.  Please take the time to fill this out with your feedback about the curriculum, the report cards or any other comments you have.  The report card should be signed, the comment section completed and returned to school as soon as possible.  We will record the comments and send the report card right back to you for your home records.

Picture re-takes also went home on Friday.  If you are interested in ordering any of the photos, please send in the completed forms and money as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
