Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off the day with our weekly spelling tests.  The marked spelling tests will be going home with your children tonight.  We then began the final assignment for the rules line of inquiry.  The children were asked to created a flip-coin with a rule written on one side, and the reason for following the rule on the other side of the coin.  The children had a lot of fun completing the coins in class today!  During math today the children worked on counting (grade one) and adding double digit numbers (grade two).  The children went to french class today as well.  Because it was spirit day today, we also had a school assembly which informed us that Zeta is in the lead for house points so far this year :)

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each in spelling books.

Important information:  Your children are bringing home many forms with them tonight. Please keep an eye out for Lunch Moms order forms, Terry Fox pledge forms, karate and guitar forms, spelling tests, and the rules skit checklist.

Cookies are still for sale everyday at 2nd recess.  If you would like your child to buy a cookie please send them with $1.

Please see my note on yesterday's blog about the uniform policy at St. Jude's.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on 'short E' words.  The children had to identify them and then use them in sentences.  They were also asked to think of their own 'short E' words to put into sentences. Today while working the IB line of inquiry on rules,  the children presented the skits they had worked on yesterday in their partners.  It was a very fun and creative way of seeing what rules have stood out to them during this unit.  They all were assessed on their skits using a checklist which I will photocopy for each student and send home tomorrow.  During math today the children had some much needed practice tracing and writing out their numbers (grade one).  The grade twos worked on addition and subtraction sentences.  They completed questions and even began making their own addition and subtraction sentences.  They also went to french and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice spelling words for tomorrow's spelling test, and complete bell work if necessary.

Important information:  Cookies are going to be on sale everyday for $1 with all proceeds going towards the student council.

Tomorrow is our first Spirit Day.  Children may come to school dressed in their house colours if they choose.

The lunches provided by Lunch Moms do not come with cutlery.  If you are ordering your child a lunch with Lunch Moms, please send in a set for your child to use in their lunch bags.

Now that the second week of school is almost over, Mr. Sawatsky is going to begin watching student's uniforms more closely.  Students must come to school in their full uniform.  In our class I have students who often some not wearing proper shoes, wearing non-uniform sweaters, and wearing socks that are not the navy socks that are allowed.  Please make sure your child comes to school in a proper uniform everyday.  If there is an issue with the supplier please let me know.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

In today's class we began the day working on long vowels. The children were asked to identify long 'a' vowel words and put them into sentences.  They were also asked to think of their own long vowel words and create sentences independently.  We also moved further with our IB line of inquiry regarding rules.  In today's class the children were put into pairs and were asked to create a skit about rules - either being followed or broken.  The children had a lot of fun with it and are going to present them to the class tomorrow.  During math today the children worked on matching and counting (grade one) and number sentences (grade two).  They also went to drama, P.E and french classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and complete bell work if necessary.

Important information:  Cookies are on sale every day at 2nd recess for $1.  Please send in money if you would like your child to buy a cookie.

This Friday is our first spirit day.  Please send your child dressed in their house colours if they would like to participate.

Our first weekly spelling test will be taking place this Friday.

Some children are still missing their red french duotangs.  Every child needs to bring in 6 of the kind with metal tabs in the middle.

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off this great day today by working on our creative writing skills.  The children were asked to create either a fictional or non-fictional story using the story starter "The strangest thing happened when..."  A lot of very interesting stories were submitted which was great!  The students also watched a video on vowel sounds, blends and consonant-vowel-consonant words (big, dog, man, etc).  They seemed to really enjoy it.  During math the children worked on matching numbers and amounts (grade one), and creating number lines and adding and subtracting (grade two).  We also began reading a book called The Year of the Rat.  The story is about a girl named Pacy who encounters situations that require patience, acceptance, courage and empathy.  These qualities are very close to the qualities that are sought after via the IB Learner Profile which we discussed in class in great detail today.  Ask your child to tell you tonight about what they learned about the learner profile!

To remind you, the Learner Profile is a list of student qualities and characteristics that are valued by IB.  Each month I am going to choose a member of our class that has shown one or more of these attributes, and they will receive a certificate and reward.  The Learner Profile attributes are knowledgeable, balanced, reflective, inquirer, principled, communicator, caring, thinker, risk-taker and open-minded.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice spelling words, and complete bell work if necessary.

Important information:  Cookies will be for sale everyday from now on during 2nd recess.  The cookies will be $1 each with all profits going towards the student council.

This Friday is our first spirit day.  All children should come to school dressed in their house colours.

The spelling practice is something that should be done at home every night in preparation for Friday's spelling test.  I recommend students write the words into sentences, arranged them using ABC order, unscramble the letters to find their spelling words, etc.  These activities are for you and your child to decide on and will not have to be shown to me for assessment.

Mme. Stella is still missing 6 red doutangs from some students.  If you have not sent your child with their duotangs please do so ASAP.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on sentence writing.  This is a skill that I am planning on working a lot this school year to develop a class full of amazing writers!  This morning they were allowed to chose to write either a fiction or non-fiction story using the story starter "After school today..."  We also continued on with our IB unit on rules, relationships and responsibilities.  Today we read a story called 'Olivia', where we watched a girl follow (and not follow) rules.  The children then discussed the story and the rules they heard in their journals.  In math today the children continue with counting and matching (grade one) and more, fewer, and the same (grade two).  The children also went to drama, P.E and french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and complete bell work if necessary.

Important information:  The students received their first weekly spelling words list this morning.  They have recorded their spelling words in their spelling books that will be coming home every night.  The spelling tests will take place every Friday.  Every Monday they will receive a new weekly spelling list.  Please see the weekly spelling words copied below.

This Friday is our first Spirit Day at SJA.  Students should come to school dressed in their house colours.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
