Happy Thursday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today. The class looked festive today in their red, white and pink! The morning began with Spirit Games for Valentine's Day.

The students started off the day working on Math. During mathematics today the students had a great time reviewing concepts around units of capacity.  In today's class students partnered up and tested each other on the main concepts of the unit. While Ms. Barber conferenced one on one with students. The Math test for this unit will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. A review package was sent home this week to reinforce concepts that your child has studied at school.

In today's class the students completed the spelling test on irregular plurals. The students are expected to rewrite misspelled words ten times this weekend.
Students attended a class Valentine's Day party for 20 minutes after our first lunch, in which they exchanged Valentine's Day cards, treats and built classroom community.

Students also went to Art, PE and French classes.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log, rewrite incorrect weekly spelling words and study for Math that will be held next Wednesday.

Friday, February 14th is a PD Day at SJA.  There will be no school for students.

Monday, February 17th is Family Day.  There will be no school for students.

Please see the flyer I posted last week about the Oral Competition!  I hope all children are having a great time practising their poems at home in preparation for the in-class competition on Feb. 20th!  This is the day we will have our 3 students chosen to compete in the school competition!

St. Jude's Academy's Annual Gala Dinner is approaching and it is sure to be an evening of fun and entertainment for friends and families alike!  Mark your calenders for this event which takes place on February 22nd at 6:00pm at the Sagan Banquet Hall.  The theme for this year's Gala is 'Legends of the World' which will be reflected in the buffet diner, and the short musical performance by St. Jude's students.  A silent action, raffle tickets and a 50/50 draw will also help add to the excitement of the night. Happy Wednesday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today.

The students started off the day working on Language.  During Language today the students also worked on a worksheet to continue our discussion about this year's Olympics. We made individual predictions about which three countries will win the games this year. We discussed what factors might impact the outcome of this year's games.  Students were then asked to explain the reasons for their predictions. The games are a prime opportunity to discuss current world events, its history as well as learn more about this year's host, Russia.  The students also completed a comprehension activity on our novel study of 'Little House in the Big Woods'.  The task required the students to deconstruct the meaning of words from the text essential to the story's plot.

During our Unit of Inquiry time today the students continued on with our exploration of pioneers.  In today's class the students reviewed what they already know about pioneers (why they came to North America, how they cleared the land to use, how they built their homes, and what their homes looked like).  In today's class the students reflected on their class trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village.  As an activity each student wrote a rough copy and begun a good copy of a postcard reflecting on their experience and  favourite part of the trip.

During mathematics today the students had a great time continuing to exploring concepts around units of capacity.  In today's class we reviewed the concepts that have been learned to date in the measurement unit, and then the students were introduced to methods of estimating mass. Students specifically explored the unit of grams. They compared volumes of common household items and determined relative masses of each. This is a fun and important skill that I encourage all students to practice in any real-life situations they can outside of the classroom!  The concepts were also reinforced in their math workbooks. The math test for this unit will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. A review package will be sent home this week to reinforce concepts that your child has studied at school.

Students also went to PE and French classes.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log, weekly spelling, Olympics worksheet and Math pages 134 - 135.

Happy Monday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today.

The students started off the day working on Language.  In today's class the students explored spelling irregular plurals. The remainder of this will be homework for this evening. During Language today the students also worked on a worksheet to start up our discussion about this year's Olympics. Today we started with a history of the Olympic Games (both the ancient and modern games). The games are a prime opportunity to discuss current world events, its history as well as learn more about this year's host, Russia.  The students also completed a comprehension activity on our novel study of 'Little House in the Big Woods'.  The task required the students to consider the text from the perspective of the characters and what emotions they might have had at the time.

During our Unit of Inquiry time today the students continued on with our exploration of pioneers.  In today's class the students reviewed what they already know about pioneers (why they came to North America, how they cleared the land to use, how they built their homes, and what their homes looked like).  In today's class the students explored what the pioneers ate to survive.  As a class they read a story, had a great class discussion and then worked on a reinforcement activity.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!

During mathematics today the students had a great time continuing to exploring concepts around units of capacity.  In today's class we reviewed the concepts that have been learned to date in the measurement unit, and then the students were introduced to methods of estimating mass. Students specifically explored the unit of kilograms. They compared volumes of common household items and determined relative masses of each. This is a fun and important skill that I encourage all students to practice in any real-life situations they can outside of the classroom!  The concepts were also reinforced in their math workbooks.
