Good afternoon!

The students began the day today by working on language . The students had their weekly spelling tests.  We changed to layout of the spelling tests which are now completed in their Spelling Notebooks.  I was finding that tests were going missing once I sent them home with the students, so I hope this system of testing right in the actual book will make the review and the re-writing of words more convenient for the students.  The students also worked on cursive writing.

The students then moved on to our Unit of Inquiry. In today's class the students were asked to complete a journal entry about the trip we took to Toronto yesterday.  The students were asked to reflect on their favourite part of the trip, the thing that surprised them the most, and facts that they learned from the chocolate factory.  It was great to see the reflections of the students and how much learning and enjoyment came from the trip!  The students then moved on to working on their miniature models of an urban and rural landscape.  These models are really coming along and I cannot wait for the finished products to be revealed next week!

During math today the children worked on a various math concepts in their Arithmetic books.  As a class we reviewed how to borrow from other columns.  The students worked on this concept in their math books, as well as multiplication of their zero and ones tables.

The students also went to PE, Art and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, math pages 13 - 14 and Cursive page 29.

Important information:  The free yoga event is happening today at 4pm at SJA for any and all interested families.  I know the event will be a lot of fun!  I hope many families are able to attend this exciting event.

A cross country permission form has come home with students who are on the cross country team.  Please have a look at this form and return to Ms. Genco and Ms. Elliott.

Students in the Upper School are beginning to sell tickets for the Fall Festival on Monday.  Tickets are $3 each for the event which is taking place on Wednesday, October 30th at 7pm.  During this event students may come wearing their Halloween costumes, they will play games, listen to music and dance.  The money collected for this event will be donated to the Upper School's charity of choice the WWF.  Please contact Ms. Elliott for more details at melliott@stjudesacademy.com.

Good afternoon!

We had a great day at SJA today in our grade 3 class!  We started off the day with a discussion about dictionaries.  As a class we discussed how, when and why we use them.  We discussed the different types of dictionaries and the best methods for using them.  As a class we began creating our own picture dictionaries with words, definitions and pictures to match.  We then organized our words into alphabetical order.  Once we completed our class discussion the students were asked to continue working on this activity independently in their Ontario Writing books.  The students were asked to brainstorm a list of words they could define and then choose 6 words from their list.  The students gave their words definitions, drew illustrations for them and ordered them in alphabetical order.  They had a lot of fun on this activity.  Ask your child to tell you about it tonight!
In our Unit of Inquiry today the students continued working on their 3D models of their urban and rural landscapes.  The students are having a lot of fun putting their learning about these types of communities into real life examples!  We also had a discussion about the trip to Toronto that we are taking tomorrow.  The students were asked to use their journals to make predictions for the trip, guess the things the are going to see, and explain the events they are most excited for.  This activity really helped to get the excitement for tomorrow's trip going!
During math today the children had their unit test on the patterning and place value unit we have been working on.  Marked unit tests will be coming home with each child shortly.

The students also went to PE, Art and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, and practice weekly spelling words.

Important information: We are meeting at the Meadowvale GO station at 7:30am tomorrow morning!  Unfortunately students who are late and miss the train will not be able to join us and will be asked to return home for the day.  Please see the information I sent home yesterday with all students, as well as my posting with important trip information last night.  There are very specific regulations to be allowed to enter into the Cadbury Factory.  I want to make sure all students are able to participate so please make sure you read the guidelines very carefully.

Looking forward to seeing all the students and our volunteers tomorrow!

Friday October 11th is a PD day at SJA.  This means there will be no school for students.

Monday, October 14th is Thanksgiving Day.  There will be no school on this day to recognize the holiday.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Happy Tuesday!

The students began the day today by working on language . The students were asked to use their Creative Writing folders and write a creative writing story of their choice.  This is an important skill, as creative writing allows their minds to open up for other types of writing, and it also allows them to practice important elements of writing such as dialogue, proofreading, paragraph formations, character development, etc.  And mostly importantly it is a great deal of fun!  A number of great stories were turned in today on topics such as toys coming to life, an adventure under the sea, birthday parties and royal battles!  Ask your child tonight what they chose to wrote about.  After their creative writing the students had a review of the rules of capitalization we have completed to date, and worked on a reinforcement activity in their workbooks.

The students then moved on to our Unit of Inquiry. In today's class the students completed the rough plans for their models that they began working on yesterday while I was away.  Students completed their rough plans for their urban and rural landscapes and are very much looking forward to continuing construction tomorrow!

During math today the children had an extensive review period of the patterning and place value unit we have been working on.  Due to my absence yesterday the unit test has been pushed back to tomorrow.  Students have brought home a review package with them tonight.  Students can choose to complete as many of the review questions as they would like.  I have gone through the package and circled the questions that touch some of the major topics.

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, math unit review pages and Language pages 22 - 23.

Important information: Please see the important information I sent home with each child tonight regarding the class trip to Toronto we are taking on Thursday.  Volunteers also have an additional information package to help describe their role on the trip.  Please contact me with any questions!

The grade 3s will be having their first math unit test tomorrow on their patterning and place value unit we have been working on for the last few weeks.

A boy in our class came home with the wrong SJA uniform pants last week after changing in PE class. His name is marked in his pants. Please check your son's pants at home to make sure they are wearing the correct pants and did not take home the wrong pair. This boy has a pair of pants he needs to trade back once his pants are located.

A girl in Mrs. Haag's Grade 4 class is missing her SJA cardigan. It is labeled with her name. Please check for this missing cardigan at home.

Please make sure that all articles of the uniform are clearly marked with your child's name.It is almost impossible to tell these pieces apart once there is a mix-up. The only way for your child's uniform to stay sorted is to ensure it is clearly marked.

We are looking to have small boxes collected for an upcoming project in our Unit of Inquiry. The students are going to be asked to build small scale rural and urban communities. Please help us with this project by collecting and sending in small boxes that we can use. Please see the form sent home yesterday for more information.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
