Good afternoon!

Again today I was in the school, but away from our classroom as I went about touring the school with the visiting IB consultant.  While I was away the children had their weekly spelling test, worked on language, practiced the Gala dance, and got a chance to orally listen to cultural stories to help compliment our IB unit on cultural art forms.   This was a great way to experience oral story telling, which was a huge part of aboriginal culture.  The children also went to  french class today.

Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and re-write incorrect weekly spelling words ten times each.

Important information:  A field trip permission form went home with every student last night.  Our class is taking a field trip to the ROM as part of our current IB unit- How We Express Ourselves.  This should be a great way to see the art forms we have been discussing in class in real life!  Please send in the completed trip form with a cheque or cash by Monday, February 13th.  I am looking for one parent volunteer from our class.

If you have not sent back ticket money and family information regarding the Gala to Irene, please do so as soon as possible. February 11th is quickly approaching and I want to make sure everyone is fully prepared to participate in the Gala!

I am asking that all children come to school wearing red and white on the night of the Gala for our class' performance. Preferably the children will have white on the bottom and red on the top. This will go with the love theme for the evening. Our class is going to be presenting The Jackson 5's ABC. The performance is coming along very well so far! If your child would like to practice the dance moves at home you can find the version we are using at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOXG8wtxx_w.

If your child is the in the choir, we are also asking that they wear read and white for the choir performance. So for this concert we will not require a costume change in between songs. As soon as the choir finishes singing, the children will then join back with their classes for the class performance. The process will be very similar to the Christmas concert.

If your child is in the choir and would like to practice the song you can find the version online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn5K-phiBzo and the lyrics for the song can be found at http://www.lyricsfreak.com/e/elvis+presley/love+me+tender_20049149.html. Please note, we are only performing the first 4 verses.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Nelson

Happy Thursday!

I was in the school today, but away from our classroom as we have an IB consultant visiting the school for two days and I was guiding her through the school for the day.  I was able to pop my head into our classroom at points during the day and I saw the students busy working in their language, sentence writing, math and cursive.  I did have a chance to work on on IB unit of inquiry with the students today.  We read a non-fiction book about aboriginal dot art, and then watched a video explaining how to create your own dot art paintings.  The students then had a great time creating their own aboriginal dot art paintings while listening to historical aboriginal music.  This was a great part of the day.  The children also went to music and french class.

Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 114- 115, Letters and Sounds page 142 -115 and math pages 136 - 137.

A pizza order form went home with all children on Monday night. If you would like to order pizza for your child please send in the form and money before the date indicated. Lunch Moms is not going to be delivering to SJA after this Friday, so the weekly pizza program has been brought in instead.

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today working on a comprehension activity.  The children read a story about a girl named Kim who took a trip to her Grandma's house and found some interesting things in the attic.  They had to answer questions about the story after reading it.  Ask your child tonight to tell you about it. In our IB unit of inquiry we reviewed the important facts that we have learned about Metis and Huron culture.  The children then independently completed a Venn Diagram organizing the information they have learned by comparing and contrasting the two cultures.  This was a good way for me to see what information has been picked up.  In language today the children worked on rhyming words, root words, finishing sentences and cursive. During math today the children worked on length and estimating (grade one) and identifying pattern cores (grade two).  They also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 112- 113, Letters and Sounds page 112 -113and math pages 134 - 135.

Bonjour!

We started off the day today working on a writing activity.  As a class we discussed how and why we use posters, and the elements of a good poster.  We spoke about how art is a big part of posters and that this is another way that art can be used for communication.  The children were split into pairs and were asked to create their own poster that advertised something.  Ask your child to tell you about what they designed tonight!   In our IB unit of inquiry we read a non-fiction book about another aboriginal group of Canada- the Huron.  The children got to see how they live, and how they used art to express themselves and their culture.  We then discussed all the difference that we could note between the art and culture of the Metis and the Hurons. We also spent some time practicing for the upcoming Gala today.   During math today the children worked on length (grade one) and describing the attributes of various patterns (grade two).  They also went to french and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 110- 111, Letters and Sounds page 110 -111and math pages 132 - 133.

Happy Monday!

We started off the day today working in our spelling books and copying down the new weekly spelling words.  This week is a review week.  All the words have been studied and tested before.  This is a way to make sure that the words are being remembered after the week is up.  After spelling we began working on our IB unit of Inquiry.  We read a book about Canada's Metis, and had a chance to discuss their art and culture.  The children heard about their clothing, ceremonies, music, dance and storytelling, and we discussed how these are important elements of their culture.  Ask your child tonight to tell you what they learned!    We also read another chapter of The Tale of Despereaux together.  During math today the children worked on length and height (grade one) and describing the attributes of various patterns (grade two).  They also went to french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive pages 108 - 109, spelling workbook page 77 - 80 and math pages 130 - 131.

Important information:  If you have not sent back ticket money and family information regarding the Gala to Irene, please do so as soon as possible.  February 11th is quickly approaching and I want to make sure everyone is fully prepared to participate in the Gala!
