Good afternoon!

We had a really fun Friday today!  The children really had a lot of fun at the Skate-a-thon today.  It was a lot of fun seeing them out there enjoying themselves as they learned to skate. We are already looking forward to next year!  I think that by taking the chance to get out there and learn to skate, it was helping our students become risk-takers, which is an important element of the IB Learner Profile.  Today we also worked on language, and social studies.  In social studies the children continue exploring maps. They were given maps and had to read them to find information and directions.  They seemed to have a lot of fun trying to locate different items and places on real life maps.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, rewrite incorrect spelling words ten times each (if they haven't already) and Language page 143 - 144.

Important information:  The summer uniforms are allowed to be worn at SJA now that Easter has passed.  This means that the white polo shirt can be worn with the SJA gray pants or tunics with or without a sweater.

The math re-test took place at lunch recess.  Marked spelling tests will be going home with your child tonight if they wrote the re-test.

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon!

In today's class we started off our day by having our spelling test and working in our spelling books.  The marked spelling tests are coming home with your children tonight.  During language we also worked on special sounds and suffixes.  In math today we had a review of  counting by 3's, and addition and subtracting two and three digit numbers.  In social studies we began a mapping assignment.  The children studied maps and then drew their own maps of the classroom.  Their maps are coming home with them tonight!  They also went to music, french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, Letters and Sounds page 124 - 125, and Arithmetic page 175- 176.

Important information:  Tomorrow is the Skate-a-thon!  This is a casual day.  Children do not need to come to school in their uniforms.

If children would like to skate tomorrow, they need to bring a helmet with them to school to use.

Pledges can still be collected to help SJA reach its goal of $7,000!

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We had a great day today!  We started off the day by working on language.  The children worked on story writing, rearranging sentences, opposites and special sounds.  During math today the children wrote their math test for our 6th math unit.  The marked unit tests will be going home with your child tonight.  In history the children heard more about ancient China.  We read about China's first emperor, and how and why The Great Wall of China was created.  By learning more about the history of other cultures it is hoped that the children will become more Open-Minded, which is an important element of the IB Learner Profile!  The children also went to drama class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words and Language page 140 - 141.

Important information:  The Skate-a-thon is happening this Friday!  Only a few more days are left to collect pledges for the fundraiser.  We hope that $7,000 will be collected during this fundraiser to help our school gain its IB certification.

The marked math tests are going home with your children tonight.  Math re-tests will be available for students who scored 84% or lower this Friday at lunch recess.

The Skate-a-thon is a casual day.  Students do not need to come to school dressed in their St. Jude's uniform.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!

We had a great day back to school today, after what seemed like a very long time away from school.  We started off the day by recording the new weekly spelling words and working in our spelling books.  During math we had a review period for the unit test that is taking place tomorrow.  The children studied and listed the vertices, edges and faces for many 3D shapes.  This is something that is going to be a large part of the unit test tomorrow, so it was great they were all able to practice today.  The review sheets are going home with your child tonight.  In grade one we spent time identifying the names of various 3D shapes and building structures with them.    In history we read about ancient Chinese calligraphy and how it came to be.  Afterwards the children practiced their own calligraphy!  Becoming broad and versatile communicators is an important aspect of the IB Learner Profile.  By making our own calligraphy it was a fun way of working towards this goal.  The students also went to music, french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and Language page 138 - 139.

Important information:  Tomorrow is Casual Day at SJA.

This Friday is the Skate-a-thon!  This means that there are only a few days left before pledges are due.  Please make sure that your children are out collecting to help SJA make it to our pledge goal.  And don't forget the wonderful prizes that are available to the students who are collecting the most!

Tomorrow is our unit 6 math test.

Our weekly spelling test is going to be on Thursday morning this week.  I undertsand this only allows for two nights of studying, but the spelling words we have this week are often seen and used in the letters and sounds and language books.  I want to make sure we have enough time for the test, and with the Skate-a-thon on Friday it might be too rushed.  So the quiz is taking place on Thursday.

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
