Happy Friday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today.

The students started off the day working on reading in French with the grade eights. After that, students completed our weekly spelling test. Their spelling booklets are coming home with each student that needs to re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each over the weekend if they didn't get a chance to complete their corrections in class.

During our Unit of Inquiry time today the students continued on with our exploration of pioneers.  In today's class the students reviewed what they already know about pioneers (why they came to North America, how they built their homes, what their homes looked like,  what animal products and by products were used for in their daily lives).  In today's class the students completed the section on methods pioneers used for farming animals.  They also completed an entry in their 'Pioneer A-Z Dictionary'.  The entries are specific and include new terms directly related to their learning in this Unit of Inquiry. By the end of the unit each student will have their very own dictionary of definitions and illustrations all about pioneer life. This dictionary can be used to compare and contrast differences between Pioneers and our modern lifestyle.
The students had a great time working on an art project today where they were able to solidify the concepts they have previously learned about magnetic forces.  In today's class we reviewed the concepts that have been learned to date about magnets and their properties.  Students then had a chance to get creative and use magnets to creative individualized artwork!  Ask them about their fantastic works of art!

Students also went to Art, PE and French classes.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log, Math (A Becka) pages 61 - 62, and re-write incorrect spelling words 10 times.
Important information:  Our class will be heading to Black Creek Pioneer Village next Tuesday!  Students are asked to dress in their gym clothes for this class trip.  Students are asked to check the weather reports carefully before school that day, as we will be spending a good portion of the trip outdoors, rain or shine.  So please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  The bus will be leaving SJA at 9:15 sharp and will be returning back to school for normal afternoon dismissal.

Friday, February 14th is a PD Day at SJA.  There will be no school for students.

Monday, February 17th is Family Day.  There will be no school for students.

Student Council will continue selling Candy Grams for Valentine's Day until Wednesday of next week.  The cost is $0.25 per gram.  Students will get to send a note and a Hershey kiss.   Candy Grams will be sold until the 12th of February and then delivered to the students on February 13th in their classes.

Please see the flyer I posted yesterday about the Oral Competition!  I hope all children are having a great time practising their poems at home in preparation for the in-class competition on Feb. 20th!  This is the day we will have our 3 students chosen to compete in the school competition!

St. Jude's Academy's Annual Gala Dinner is approaching and it is sure to be an evening of fun and entertainment for friends and families alike!  Mark your calenders for this event which takes place on February 22nd at 6:00pm at the Sagan Banquet Hall.  The theme for this year's Gala is 'Legends of the World' which will be reflected in the buffet diner, and the short musical performance by St. Jude's students.  A silent action, raffle tickets and a 50/50 draw will also help add to the excitement of the night. Happy Thursday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today.

The students started off the day working on language.  In today's class the students explored a graphic story.  This activity had the students read a graphic version of Jack and the Beanstalk, after which they completed questions pertaining to the story and created their own graphic story with an alternate ending to Jack and the Beanstalk. The remainder of this booklet will be homework for this evening. During language today the students also worked on the use of ' drank' versus 'drunk' and 'ate' versus 'eaten'.  The students also enjoyed reading another chapter of 'Little House in the Big Woods'.  In today's class they read chapter 6 together as a class.

During our Unit of Inquiry time today the students continued on with our exploration of pioneers.  In today's class the students reviewed what they already know about pioneers (why they came to North America, how they cleared the land to use, how they built their homes, and what their homes looked like).  In today's class the students began exploring the methods pioneers used for farming animals as well as what animal products and by products were used for in their daily lives.  As a class they read a story, had a great class discussion and then worked on a reinforcement activity.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!

During mathematics today the students had a great time continuing to exploring concepts around units of capacity.  In today's class we reviewed the concepts that have been learned to date in the measurement unit, and then the students were introduced to methods of estimating the volume of various items.  Students explored different units of capacity (which were millimetres and litres). They compared volumes of common household items and determined proper units for each of them. This is a fun and important skill that I encourage all students to practice in any real-life situations they can outside of the classroom!  The concepts were also reinforced in their math workbooks.

Students also went to PE and French classes.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, Jack and The Beanstalk booklet, Math pages 128 - 129, and Language page 106.

Our trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village is quickly approaching!  There are a few items I wanted to be sure to communicate home with all families:

  • The bus will be departing SJA at 9:15 sharp.  Please ensure your child is here on time to board the bus.
  • Students are asked to come to school wearing their gym clothes to be more comfortable as we explore the village.
  • Students are asked to come to school dressed appropriately for the weather of the day.  A portion of the trip is spent outside exploring the village, so please ensure your child is prepared with the proper outdoor clothing.
  • Students are asked NOT to bring backpacks with them into the village.  Students should bring their lunch bags and water bottles, which will be locked in a bin in a lunch room to be brought out during lunch time.  There will not be room for back packs to be locked away, and students are asked not to have back packs on their bodies throughout the village.
  • There is a gift shop in the village.  Students may choose to bring money with them to purchase items from the gift shop if time permits us to shop.
For any other questions about the trip, please let me know!

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good Morning!

Happy Tuesday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today.

The students started off the day working on language.  In today's class the students explored 'I Wish' poems.  This activity had the students brainstorming their important wishes for their future, and turning these wishes into poems.  Ask your child tonight what their wishes consisted of!  During language today the students also worked on the use of ' threw' versus 'thrown' and 'began' versus 'begun'.  The students also enjoyed reading another chapter of 'Little House in the Big Woods'.  In today's class they read chapter 5 together as a class, and then the students worked on an independent comprehension exercise based off the chapter.

During our Unit of Inquiry time today the students continued on with our exploration of pioneers.  In today's class the students reviewed what they already know about pioneers (why they came to North America, how they cleared the land to use, how they built their homes, and what their homes looked like).  In today's class the students began exploring the methods pioneers used to plant their crops.  As a class they read a story, had a great class discussion and then worked on a reinforcement activity.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!

During mathematics today the students had a great time continuing to explore money.  In today's class we reviewed the concepts that have been learned to date in the measurement unit, and then the students were introduced to methods of adding and subtracting various amounts of money.  Students explored how to add the price of two items together, and then calculate the amount of change they would be owed based on the amount they paid with.  They also practised determining how many items they would be able to buy with a certain amount of money, based on the price of the items. This is a fun and important skill that I encourage all students to practice in any real-life situations they can outside of the classroom!  The students had a great deal of fun in today's lesson using manipulatives, the textbooks and reinforcing in their math workbooks.

Students also went to PE and French classes.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, and Math pages 126 - 127, and Language page 105.
