Happy Tuesday!

The grade three students had another great day working along with Ms. Barber, who was in teaching our class again today.

The students started off the day working on language.  In today's class the students explored 'I Wish' poems.  This activity had the students brainstorming their important wishes for their future, and turning these wishes into poems.  Ask your child tonight what their wishes consisted of!  During language today the students also worked on the use of ' threw' versus 'thrown' and 'began' versus 'begun'.  The students also enjoyed reading another chapter of 'Little House in the Big Woods'.  In today's class they read chapter 5 together as a class, and then the students worked on an independent comprehension exercise based off the chapter.

During our Unit of Inquiry time today the students continued on with our exploration of pioneers.  In today's class the students reviewed what they already know about pioneers (why they came to North America, how they cleared the land to use, how they built their homes, and what their homes looked like).  In today's class the students began exploring the methods pioneers used to plant their crops.  As a class they read a story, had a great class discussion and then worked on a reinforcement activity.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!

During mathematics today the students had a great time continuing to explore money.  In today's class we reviewed the concepts that have been learned to date in the measurement unit, and then the students were introduced to methods of adding and subtracting various amounts of money.  Students explored how to add the price of two items together, and then calculate the amount of change they would be owed based on the amount they paid with.  They also practised determining how many items they would be able to buy with a certain amount of money, based on the price of the items. This is a fun and important skill that I encourage all students to practice in any real-life situations they can outside of the classroom!  The students had a great deal of fun in today's lesson using manipulatives, the textbooks and reinforcing in their math workbooks.

Students also went to PE and French classes.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, and Math pages 126 - 127, and Language page 105.
Important information:  Our class will be heading to Black Creek Pioneer Village next Tuesday!  Students are asked to dress in their gym clothes for this class trip.  Students are asked to check the weather reports carefully before school that day, as we will be spending a good portion of the trip outdoors, rain or shine.  So please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  The bus will be leaving SJA at 9:15 sharp and will be returning back to school for normal afternoon dismissal.

Student Council began selling Candy Grams for Valentine's Day starting today.  The cost is $0.25 per gram.  Students will get to send a note and a Hershey kiss.   Candy Grams will be sold until the 12th of February and then delivered to the students on February 13th in their classes.
Oral presentations will be taking place on February 27th at 9am here at SJA!  Students will be competing in the gym to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for their poem recitation (JK - Grade 3) and their speech presentation (Grade 4 - 9).  All students in our class have brought home their poems with them tonight to begin the hard work of memorizing their poems.  Students will be judged on their voice, poise, actions and memorization of their poem.  Our class will choose 3 students on the 20th of February.  These 3 students will represent our class in the final competition.  The in-class speech presentation will also be used as part of their oral language mark for this term.  Please have a look tonight to see which poem your child has been assigned!
