Good afternoon!

It is my mistake that I have been posting a uniform description from our old uniform policy.  Mock turtle-necks are part of the old uniform which are not to be worn at SJA any longer.  The uniform is switching after Thanksgiving, which means that short sleeved polos are no longer permitted during the fall/winter season. When we return from the long weekend, all students are asked to come to school wearing their long sleeved button-ups and their SJA sweaters.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend!

Good afternoon!

In our  language period today the students started off with spelling where they were tested on their weekly spelling words.  All students will be bringing home a marked spelling test with them tonight.  The students then moved on to a Thanksgiving Day reflection booklet where they were asked to reflect on what they are thankful for, and how they can do kind things for others.  The students had a lot of fun working on their booklets and colouring in the Thanksgiving themed images.  All students will be bringing home their Thanksgiving book with them tonight!
In our Unit of Inquiry today the students continue working on their community research project.  Students got back into their partners and continued working on their rough copies using the information they collected last night for homework, as well as laptops.  The students are working very hard and collecting a great deal of information which is great for their good copies!  Next week, the students will begin taking the information and pictures they have been collecting and will turn it into their good copies that will be presented to the class.
During math today the children began exploring the concept of factors.  As a class we saw how numbers can be used in various ways to create sums and differences.  As a class we worked on examples such as taking the numbers 7, 3, and 10 and turning them into 7 + 3 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10, 10 - 3 = 7 and 10 - 7 = 3.  The students had a lot of fun seeing the pattern!  After our whole class exploration, the students began practising the concept in their Homework and Practice book.  They also got into partners and played a game using flashcards to find the product of two numbers.  Ask your child tonight to tell you about it!

The students also went to PE, Art and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, and research pictures of the community for your research project.

Important information: I ask that you please sign your child's math unit test that came home last night and send it back to school so I can ensure the results have been shared at home.  Math re-tests for students who scored 84% or lower will take place Tuesday, October 15th at first recess.

The policies for uniforms will switch over to the fall/winter regulations when we return to school after the Thanksgiving long weekend. Students will no longer be allowed to wear their short sleeved polo shirts to school and will be required to come to school wearing either their mock turtle-neck or their long sleeved button up with their SJA vest. Please let Alpa know if you have any uniform questions or needs by contacting her at uniforms@stjudesacademy.com.

Fall Festival tickets are still on sale next week during first recess! Tickets are $3 each and will be sold for the event which takes place on Wednesday, October 30th at 7pm here at SJA. This will be a night of fun for the students, where they come in costume and play games with their peers. Please contact Ms. Elliott at melliott@stjudesacademy.com if you have any other questions about the event.

Tomorrow is a PD day at SJA. This means there will be no school for students.

Monday, October 14th is Thanksgiving Day. There will be no school on this day to recognize the holiday.

Have a great Thanksgiving weekend!

Happy Wednesday!

We had a great day today at SJA!  The students started off the day today by working on language.  As a class we brainstormed the reasons for announcements and the items that need to be included in a proper announcement (the 5 w's).  We then made a fictional class announcement together about a Christmas Open-House we are hosting for the community.  The students then worked independently in their Ontario Writing books where they created an announcement of their own.  Once this was completed the students moved on to practicing capitals and punctuation in their Language books.

In our Unit of Inquiry today the students continued working on their final project of the unit that we began discussing yesterday. The students were put into pairs and chose the community they wanted to complete their research on.  Students were given a chance to use laptops to begin online research on their community to answer their research questions.  Once the rough copy research has been collected, students will turn their research in to a good copy which the pairs of students will present to the class.  Students have been asked to continue their research tonight on their computers at home to continue finding information on their chosen community's population, location, types of jobs, recreational activities, types of buildings, transportation, tourist attractions, resources and interesting facts.   Student have been informed that they may print off or write down information they find at home this evening to be used in class tomorrow.

During math today the children were given back their math unit tests from last week.  All students have a test that has been marked and will be coming home with them tonight.  Students who received a mark of 84% or less (level 3 and below) will have the opportunity to write a re-test on Tuesday, October 15th at first recess.  I ask that all parents sign their child's math test and send it back so I can ensure the test has been shared.  In today's math period our class went back through the math test question by question so that students could have a full explanation of areas they might have gone wrong.  After we took-up the math test, the students moved on in their numeration unit to focus on subtraction.  We explored various methods to subtract numbers, and the students had a chance to practice these methods in their Homework and Practice books.

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, community research collection, Language page 26 - 27 and math pages 32 - 33.

Important information: The math re-test for students who received an 84% or lower on their test will take place on Tuesday, October 15th at lunch recess.  The unit test the students have brought home with them will be their primary source to study from.

Fall Festival tickets are on sale this week at first recess!

Ms. Elliott and Ms. Genco are holding a cross country practice for those students who are on the team. They are meeting tonight from 4:00 - 4:30pm.

Friday October 11th is a PD day at SJA. This means there will be no school for students.

Good afternoon!

The students started off the day today by working on language period.  The students were asked to work in their Creative Writing folders to write a fictional story about themselves being owners of a chocolate factory!  The students had a lot of great ideas for their stories using inspiration from the trip last week, the story we are reading in class and their own imaginations.  The students had a chance to read their stories out loud once they had finished writing which was a lot of fun!  We also read more of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which the students really enjoyed. The students then broke into their novel study groups where they worked on a reflection of today's chapters.
In our Unit of Inquiry today the students began making plans for the research project we are beginning.  Students are going to be put into pairs and are going to be asked to inquire and explore a community of their choice.  The research is going to be student led, and completed in class using books and lap tops.  Students will create rough copies and good copies of their research.  The good copies will be presented to the class once the projects have been completed.
During math today the children worked on various math concepts in their Arithmetic books such as multiplication tables up to the two times tables, addition and subtraction.  The students also worked in their Math Makes Sense books where we explored addition charts again.  After the students completed reinforcement questions in their Homework books they had a chance to play a math addition game with a partner to help them practice their addition skills!
The students also went to PE class today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, and Abeka corrections page 15 - 16.

Important information: The policies for uniforms will switch over to the fall/winter regulations when we return to school after the Thanksgiving long weekend. Students will no longer be allowed to wear their short sleeved polo shirts to school and will be required to come to school wearing either their mock turtleneck or their long sleeved button up with their SJA vest. Happy Monday!

We had a great day at SJA today in our grade 3 class!  The students started off the day by copying down their weekly spelling words and working in their spelling books as part of the language period.  Please note, this week is a review week in the spelling books where the students have a chance to go back and work with words they have already worked with once this school year.  The children moved on in the language period to working on sentence construction and a review of the rules of capitalization.  We reviewed these important rules once again as a class and then the students moved on to review them in their Language books.  We also read further into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  The students had a great deal of fun listening to the tour of the factory, especially after our own tour last week!
In our Unit of Inquiry today the students worked on a mapping activity.  As a class we discussed when, why and how we use maps and the various types of maps.  We also made a map together that included all the important elements- a compass, a legend and a scale.  The students were then asked to create their own maps of a playground they know or their neighbourhood.  They had a lot of fun with this activity.
During math today the children started their new unit on addition and subtraction.  In today's class we explored addition charts as a class and inquired into the ways we can use these charts to help us find sums.  The students practiced going up and down the columns and across the rows to find the sums of various numbers.  The students then worked on reinforcing these concepts in their Homework and Practice books.

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, practice weekly spelling words, Language pages 24- 25 and Math Makes Sense pages 28 - 29.

Please let Alpa know if you have any uniform questions or needs by contacting her at uniforms@stjudesacademy.com.

Have a look at the large SJA Tree of Thanks that is displayed in the hallway of the school!  All the students have added something they are thankful for.
