We had a great day today.  We started off the day reading Thanksgiving stories and discussing our Thanksgivings.  The children also wrote their weekly spelling tests.  The marked spelling tests are coming home with your children tonight.  We continued working on our IB unit of inquiry today as well.  We reflected on the field trip we went on yesterday and compared the responsibilities we saw of children 200 years ago to our own.  We also created responsibility rainbows, where the children identified the responsibilities they have in their lives and wrote them down on a rainbow.  They coloured and decorated their rainbows using pastels which was a fun medium to master!  During math today we worked on more than and less than (grade one) and creating word problems (grade two).  The children also went to music and french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write any incorrect spelling words 10 times each, and math pages 37 - 39 (grade one).

Important information:
  • Tomorrow is a PD day so there is no school for the students.
  • Today was the last day of summer uniforms.  Beginning on Tuesday all children must wear their fall/winter uniforms.  This means no polo shirts will be accepted.  Children must come to school in their mock turtlenecks and wear either the long sweater or the sweater vest.  Navy socks or tights are the only acceptable socks and tights.
  • Monday is a holiday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  There will be no school.

Have a great long weekend!

We had such a fun time today at The Bradley Museum!  The children really had a wonderful time viewing and taking part in the many chores and responsibilities that early settler children had.  The children saw their gardens, their horse stalls, their cabins and houses.  They also made scones, played toys and helped make wool.  It was a very fun day!  Thanks again to our parent volunteers.  When we got back to school the children went to drama, french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart and practice weekly spelling words.

Important information:
  • Our weekly spelling test is going to take place tomorrow due to the P.D day on Friday.
  • The math re-test for those who need it will be taking place tomorrow.
  • Scholastic book orders and cheques are due tomorrow for those that are purchasing anything.
  • Polar Express writing competition forms went home a few weeks ago.  The contest is almost coming to a close.  Please make sure you are sending back to school any completed entries so they can be mailed into the contest.
  • Emerald lost her gym sweater yesterday at school.  I think someone from our class may have picked it up thinking it was theirs.  Emerald's sweater is labeled with her name inside of it.  If you could please check the gym sweater's of your child to see if they have taken hers by mistake that would be great.  There are gym sweaters in the lost in found that may actually belong to your child if that was the case.

Good afternoon!

We had a great day today.  We started off the day reading a book about Thanksgiving and discussed the history of the holiday in Canada.  The children then made a Thanksgiving day turkey and we all discussed what we are thankful for.  During our IB unit of inquiry we continued on with responsibility.  As a class we read a book about responsibility that showed what happens when you do not follow through with them.  The students then identified a responsibility they have at home and wrote about it in their journals.  During math we worked on 'mental math' where the children practice using their hands to add and subtract.  We also practiced adding and subtracting a multitude of numbers by one mentally.  Ask them to show you what they learned tonight!  They also went to music and french class.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, and cursive pages 13 - 14.

Important information:
  •  The weekly spelling test will take place on Thursday this week due to the P.D day on Friday.
  • The field trip to the Bradley House Museum is taking place tomorrow.  They may bring water bottles but may not bring their lunches.  Make sure your child eats a big breakfast since we will not be having a snack until around 12:00 tomorrow.
  • The children will be baking something at the Bradley House tomorrow as part of the event.  If your child cannot eat the biscuits we are making please let me know.
  • Friday is a P.D day this week.  There is no school.  Monday, October 10th is also a holiday and is not a school day.
Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon,

We had a great day back to school today.  We started off the day working on spelling.  The students copied down their new weekly spelling words and worked in their spelling notebooks. After spelling we read a story together about Thanksgiving and discussed the upcoming holiday.  We also began our new line of inquiry on responsibility.  As a class we read a book called 'Responsiblity' and we discussed what it means to be responsible.  We discussed three main types of responsibilities (for your community, for yourself, and chores) and the students worked in partners to list the responsibilities they currently have.  During math the children worked on calendar work.  They practiced finding days on the calendar and filling out days on a calendar.  They also went to drama, french and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and practice weekly spelling words.

Important information:  I handed our our monthly IB awards today for the month of September.  Seanna won for being balanced and Adi won for being knowledgeable.  These are some of the important IB learner qualities we look for in IB students.

The September reading charts are coming home tallied and completed today.  The students all got 1000 house points if they met or exceeded their monthly reading goal.  October reading charts have been filled out and are ready to go for the reading that is completed for this month.

I sent home the children's flip coins and their marked checklists with them tonight.  These marks have already been calculated and recorded, so I do not need the coins or the checklist brought back to school.

I wanted to remind everyone again that the home folders and agendas should be checked nightly.  You may keep all the completed materials I send home.

Scholastic book orders are due by October 6th for anyone that is interested in purchasing anything.

Our field trip to the Bradley Museum is taking place this Wednesday.  Children are allowed to bring water bottles with them to the museum, but are not allowed to take a snack.  Please make sure they all have a big breakfast beforehand!

Best regards,

Mrs. Nelson
