Bonjour!

The French Cafe was a roaring success!  Thank you very much to all the friends and families that came out to watch all the work work that the students at SJA have been doing these last few months. I was very proud to see the children in action!  Other than the French Cafe, we had some time this morning for our weekly spelling tests.  The marked tests will be going home with all the children tonight.  We also had some time to work on our new unit of inquiry.  We had a class discussion about endangered and extinct animals and how the loss of these animals affects the earth.  The children then completed a fun activity to help them explore a few endangered species.  Ask your child tonight to explain to you the difference between extinct and endangered.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, and re-write any incorrect spelling words ten times each (including bonus word).

Important information:
Information for SJA Summer Camps are now available.  SJA offers a range of camps over the summer months with a variety of themes ranging from karate camps, to writing camps to traditional summer camps programs.  Please contact the school for more information about these exciting programs.

Bonjour!

The students started off the day today working on story writing.  They were asked to use their weekly spelling words and turn them into a fictional story.  A lot of creative ideas are coming forward in this activity.  One area that I am stressing with the class as a whole is proofreading.  Some students are handing in completed work that includes sentences that begin without capitals and end without periods.  Please make sure this is an area of focus for their writing at home as well.  In language today we had a class discussion about adjectives.  We discussed what they are, when you use them, and why you use them.  The students then completed an activity where they had to identify and use various adjectives.   During math today the children worked on creating rules for data that has already been sorted (grade one) and exploring lines of symmetry in common shapes (grade two).    We also had rehearsals for tomorrow's French Cafe today.  I can't wait for friends and family to see all the hard work!  The students also went to P.E class today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Jump Math pages 194 - 195, and cursive pages 195- 197.

Important information:  The French Cafe is happening tomorrow from 12 - 3pm at SJA!  All friends and family are welcome to attend this event.  Grandparents are especially welcome to attend, as this event is taking the place of the traditional Grandparent's Day concert. A light lunch will be served.  Details for the children's costumes can be found on Mme. Stella's blog.  I am still waiting for some families to RSVP: Adi, Emerald, Seanna, Sofia, and Zuri.

For tomorrow's concert, the students may come to school dressed in their regular SJA uniforms and will have a chance to change into their costumes at school prior to the concert.  The girls all have their dresses here at school already, but any tights or undershirts needed should be sent with them in their backpacks to change in to.  The boys should bring their tuxedos with them to school and will be given a chance to change into them prior to the performance.

Lunch is going to be served at the regular time in our classrooms tomorrow prior to the performance.  Please send a regular lunch with your child tomorrow.  The performance is scheduled to end around 2:15 tomorrow afternoon.  Families are welcome to bring their child home with them at that time instead of coming back at the end of the day, or children may return to their classes for a finishing up activity.

There is going to be a book sale taking place the afternoon of the French Cafe.  Families and friends will have a chance to purchase used books at a reduced price.  Please keep this in mind when you come to attend the performance this Friday afternoon.  All proceeds will be collected and distributed by the Parent Guild.

Good afternoon!

The students started off today by working on a writing exercise.  Today's focus was paragraph  writing to tell a story.  As a class we read a paragraph about a girl named Alex who went on a camping trip with her family and then wrote a paragraph to tell about it. We discussed how all paragraphs require an opening sentence,  a body and a closing sentence and looked at examples together.  The children were then asked to write their own paragraphs that tell a story about a trip or adventure that they have gone on or would like to go on.  A lot of interesting events were described!   In language today the children worked on special sounds and identifying vowels.  We had an exciting milestone of completing our Letters and Sounds book in today's class!  The children will all be bringing home their completed books with them.  These books can now stay at home.  During math today the children worked on creating rules to sort data (grade one) and exploring lines of symmetry in common shapes (grade two).   In the afternoon today we had rehearsals for the upcoming French Cafe to help us prepare for Friday's performance.  I can't wait for friends and family to see all the hard work!  The students also went to P.E class today.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Jump Math pages 192 - 193, and cursive pages 193.

Important information:  The Hot Dog Sale is happening tomorrow at lunch recess!

The Anything and Everything Sale took place at first and second recesses today.  It was a great event and the children had a lot of fun looking through and purchasing the items that were brought in by Miss. Elliott's class.  I am sure they raised a lot of funds for their upcoming Ottawa trip.

The French Cafe is taking place this Friday from 12 - 3pm at SJA.  All friends and family are welcome to attend this event.  Grandparents are especially welcome to attend, as this event is taking the place of the traditional Grandparent's Day concert. Happy Monday!

The students started off today by copying down the new weekly spelling words and working in their spelling books.  The grade ones focused on 'y' vowel words where the grade twos focused on words with vowel pairs.    In our IB unit of inquiry today we started our brand new (and last) unit.  The central idea for this unit is 'Our planet is made up of living things with varying needs and characteristics'.  For our first activity of this unit, the students were asked to reflect and report on the question ' What does the environment mean to you?".  There were a lot of interesting answers submitted which made this a very fun first activity!  The students also wrote weekend summaries in their journals to practice the important skill of reflecting and summarizing.  During math today the children worked on sorting data using multiple attributes (grade one) and adding sides to make various shapes (grade two).   They also went to French and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words,  Jump Math page 186 - 187 and cursive page 187.
