Good afternoon!

We started off the day today with the weekly spelling test.  All students will be bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight.  I ask that all incorrectly spelled words get re-written ten times each (including the bonus word).  During language the students continued on by working in their Language books.  They were asked to use the knowledge they have collected so far to properly use periods, capitals and commas to correct various sentences.
In our Unit of Inquiry today the students had a chance to finish up their spooky stories they began working on earlier this week. All students had a checklist to reference while they worked to help them stay aware of the expectations for this writing activity.  You can tell the students just finished celebrating Halloween, as they definitely came up with a variety of topics for their scary stories!  All students will be bringing home their marked scary stories with them tonight.  In our Unit of Inquiry we also began looking at dialogue and dialogue tags.  We read a book called 'Art's Supplies' that shows what happens when dialogue goes out of control in a story.  As a class we discussed the way dialogue was used in the story and how we could improve the dialogue (with the use of dialogue tags).  The students then worked on an activity where they created dialogue for the story with appropriate dialogue tags.

During math today we spent a great deal of time reviewing the unit we have just completed as a way to prepare the students for Monday's math unit test.  As a class we used the textbook and went through all the concepts we have studied in this unit and solved a number of problems using the various concepts.  The students definitely seem ready for the test on Monday and I am confident that with the additional practice with the take-home assignment each student will be very successful on Monday's test!

The students also went to PE, Art and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each and Language pages 46 - 47.

Important information:
We will be having our next math unit test on Monday, November  4th on the numeration unit we have been working on in class.  Keep your eye out for the review package that every student brought home with them on Monday.  This review package is for the students to use at home to study.  It does not have to come back to school with them.

Please be aware of the temporary change to pick-up and drop-off beginning on November 4th.  The parking lot will be under construction and will not be able to be used at any point during the day.  Families are asked to pull up 'kiss-and-ride' style to the front of the building during morning drop-off or find parking somewhere on Campobello Road.  During the afternoon pick-up, parking will have to be found on Campobello Road.  We are very sorry for the inconvenience we know this will cause for families.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

SJA is holding a candy-drive at the school from October 28th to November 4th.  Families are welcome to send candy with their children to be dropped off in the collection bin.  The candy collected will be donated to the Eden Food Bank for families in need.  If you end up with extra candy in your house during the week of Halloween, please consider sending it in to be donated.  Students who bring candy to donate will receive house points during the morning assembly.

Friday, November 8th is a PD Day at SJA.  Students are not required to come to school on this day.

Monday, November 11th is Remembrance Day.  The school will be closed in observation of this important holiday.
Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Nelson
