Happy Halloween!

We had a very SPOOOOKY day at SJA today to celebrate Halloween!  The students had a great deal of fun today!  We saw a number of fun and interesting costumes, and had a great time celebrating in a whole-school assembly first thing in the morning.  The students played "Deal or No Deal' Halloween style in a house game competition, we had a costume contest judged by Mr. Sawatsky, the inquirers of October received their Learner Profile awards and the students sang Happy Birthday to all the October birthdays.  What a lot of fun!

In our Unit of Inquiry today we continued with the Halloween theme and completed 'novel studies' of various short stories from the horror genre.  Students were put into pairs and were given a short story they were asked to read, review and summarize. Students were asked to focus on the plot, the characters, the beginning, the middle and the end of the stories.  Once the pairs completed their mini novel studies, they had a chance to share their horror stories with the class which was a lot of fun!

During math today the students worked on a review of addition and subtraction for Monday's math unit test.  They also were asked to practice their two times tables.  As a class we also began exploring Roman numerals and inquired into how to represent numbers 1 - 20 using Roman numerals.  Ask your child tonight what they learned.

After the students worked so hard, they were treated to a Halloween class party.  They all had a great time as the students played, danced, worked with puzzles, shared Halloween stories and ate delicious Halloween treats!  Thank you very much for sending in such lovely treats for the party!

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log and practice weekly spelling words.

Important information:
We will be having our next math unit test on Monday, November  4th on the numeration unit we have been working on in class.  Keep your eye out for the review package that every student brought home with them on Monday.  This review package is for the students to use at home to study.  It does not have to come back to school with them.  We will be completing a second review package in class together.

Please be aware of the temporary change to pick-up and drop-off beginning on November 4th.  The parking lot will be under construction and will not be able to be used at any point during the day.  Families are asked to pull up 'kiss-and-ride' style to the front of the building during morning drop-off or find parking somewhere on Campobello Road.  During the afternoon pick-up, parking will have to be found on Campobello Road.  We are very sorry for the inconvenience we know this will cause for families.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

SJA is holding a candy-drive at the school from October 28th to November 4th.  Families are welcome to send candy with their children to be dropped off in the collection bin.  The candy collected will be donated to the Eden Food Bank for families in need.  If you end up with extra candy in your house during the week of Halloween, please consider sending it in to be donated.  Students who bring candy to donate will receive house points during the morning assembly.

Friday, November 8th is a PD Day at SJA.  Students are not required to come to school on this day.

Monday, November 11th is Remembrance Day.  The school will be closed in observation of this important holiday.
Have a happy Halloween!

Mrs. Nelson
