Good Afternoon!

We had a lot of fun at SJA this morning in our monthly house game!  Students from various houses competed in hula-hoop competitions for house points. The students had a lot  of fun participating and even more fun watching the teachers compete!  Way to go Kappa for coming in first place in the House competition after the first month of school.
When we returned to class the students began working on language .   The students were given their weekly spelling test.  Marked spelling tests will be coming home with each student tonight.  The class then moved on to working on sentence construction and the rules of capitalization.  In today's class we got together and read 2 more chapters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  After reading the students got together in their literature groups to reflect on the chapters.  The students finished up the language period by working on their cursive writing.
The students then moved on to our Unit of Inquiry. In today's class we completed a review of the important concepts we have been working on to date.  Ideas such as urban, rural, goods, services, land and communities were all revisited.  Next week we are beginning to work on the construction of our urban and rural cities using the boxes that students have been bringing in.  This is a great way for the students to 'show what they know'.  Please help by giving one last push on finding boxes around your house this weekend!
 During math today the children worked on rounding numbers.  As a class we had a review of the method needed to round numbers to the nearest ten.  We then moved on to practicing rounding numbers to the nearest hundred.  Students practiced this skill with a partner by using dice and playing a 'rounding numbers board game'. The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Homework: Read for 2o minutes and record in the reading log, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, and Language pages 20 - 21.

Important information: The grade 3s will be having their first math unit test on Tuesday, October 1st on their place value unit we have been working on for the last few weeks. 

A boy in our class came home with the wrong SJA uniform pants last week after changing in PE class. His name is marked in his pants. Please check your son's pants at home to make sure they are wearing the correct pants and did not take home the wrong pair. This boy has a pair of pants he needs to trade back once his pants are located.

A girl in Mrs. Haag's Grade 4 class is missing her SJA cardigan. It is labeled with her name. Please check for this missing cardigan at home.

Please make sure that all articles of the uniform are clearly marked with your child's name.It is almost impossible to tell these pieces apart once there is a mix-up. The only way for your child's uniform to stay sorted is to ensure it is clearly marked.

Happy Thursday!

We had a lot of fun at SJA today!  Today was an important day, as the students ran for charity in the annual Terry Fox Run.  It was a beautiful day for the children to get outside and run for this important cause.  The students ran hard and worked up a sweat!  I have a couple pictures from the event posted below.
When we returned to class the students began working on our Unit of Inquiry.  In today's class the students were introduced to PowerPoint which is a skill we are going to be using to complete our summative task.  In today's class we took the pictures from our community walk yesterday, and turned them into a PowerPoint.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!
During language today the students worked on sentence construction.  They were asked to take incorrect sentences and re-write them.
During math today the children completed a general review in their Arithmetic books.  Students focused on telling time, adding and subtracting, and adding decimal points.

The students also went to PE, Art and French classes today.

Good afternoon!

The students got right into the day today by having a community walk as part of our Unit of Inquiry.  The students were asked to look for various features of our community and explore them.  Features such as recreation, transportation, and industry were explored and recorded on this community walk.  The students had such fun exploring places that they didn't even know existed in their own 'backyard' such as the Canada Post Office, a cell phone tower, and a beautiful river!  There are a couple pictures posted for you below showing the students enjoying their community walk.
During language today the students working on creative writing.  The students were asked to choose a topic of their choice and write a fictional story about it, including 4 weekly spelling words.  A number of fun stories were turned in today on topics such as a day in the life of a 20-year-old, creatures under the bed, and winning a million dollars.  Ask your child tonight what they wore about!  The students also worked on sentence construction and proofreading during language.
During math today the children began exploring numbers in the thousands place.  We reviewed the most important number in our place value unit (ten) and discussed how when we have ten hundreds it turns into 1 thousand.  As a class we showed the number 1000 in various ways, and also did problem solving using the number 1000. Students are asked to practice this concept in their Homework and Practice books tonight.

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Good afternoon!

We started off the day today with language where the students worked on poetry writing.  As a class we brainstormed everything that we could think of on the topic of Thanksgiving Day.  Then as a class we chose our favourite items and added them into a poem.  It was a lot of fun to work through this activity together.  After we had our class examples the students were asked to individually create their own poems of a topic of their choice in their Ontario Writing books.  We then moved on to working with sentence construction, punctuation and rules of capitalization in our Language books.  The students finished off their language period by working on cursive.
During our Unit of Inquiry today we began to explore the topic of urbanization.  As a class we came up with a definition.  We drew diagrams and labeled the diagram to help explore the issue.  The students began coming up with points to support and to argue against urbanization.  We were then joined by Mrs. Haag's Grade 4 class where the students took place in a formal debate.  They became MPP's in the Queens Park and were asked to debate the introduction of a new Bill that dealt with urbanization.  The students had a lot of fun debating this topic.  Ask your child tonight what side of the debate they were on and why!  I have a picture included below of the students at the debate.
During math today the children went back and reviewed the multiple ways we can represent a number in the hundreds place.  Students were asked to represent the number using pictures, using base-ten numbers, and by shifting the value of each place back and forth.  Students are asked to practice this concept in their Homework and Practice books tonight.

The students also went to PE, Art and French classes today.

Important information:  Tomorrow is the first Casual Day at SJA!  Students are able to come to school wearing their casual clothes as long as they have paid their fee for the year.

Happy Monday!

We started off the day today with language where the students recorded their weekly spelling words in their notebooks.  The students continued on with spelling where they worked on various activities in their Spelling Workbooks.  We also read another two chapters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in today's class.  After reading the students were asked to get into their literature circles where they worked on reviewing, discussing and making predictions based on today's reading.  The students finished up the language period today by working in their cursive books.
During our Unit of Inquiry today the students began exploring the topic of urban planning.  As a class we discussed the role of an urban planner, and the responsibilities that come along with that profession.  The students examined our community and reflected on the pros and cons of the urban planning that went in to developing Mississauga.  The students reinforced the learning that was done in class by completing a comprehension worksheet.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!
During math today the children reviewed the concept of greater than and less than.  As a class we reviewed how to use symbols to show value between two numbers, and how to order numbers based on their value by focusing on each place individually.  Students are asked to practice this concept in their Homework and Practice books tonight.

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Important information: The students who are in the SJA Cross Country Club are meeting tomorrow at 4pm for their next practice.  The practice will run until 4:30pm.  If your child is in the club, please plan on picking them up at 4:30pm after their practice.

Unfortunately sweaters and jackets that are not part of the SJA uniform are not allowed to be worn in the school. Today was a great day at SJA!

We started off the day today with language where the students had their weekly spelling test.  All students are bringing home their marked tests with them tonight.  I ask that all incorrectly spelled words (including the bonus word) be written out ten times each in their spelling notebooks.  During language we moved on to discuss and explore World Peace Day.  This important day takes place on September 21st (tomorrow).  In today's class we discussed the meaning of peace, what peace means to us, and why peace is important in the world.  During this class discussion the students raised issues like the conflict in Syria and the life of a solider.  It was a very interesting discussion.  The students were then asked to complete a comprehension activity regarding World Peace Day.  They also created an acrostic poem using the word PEACE which they turned into a pinwheel in art class.  Ask your child tonight to share with you what they learned!  Please see the pictures I posted below of the students working on their Pinwheels for Peace!
During our Unit of Inquiry today the students joined classes with Mrs. Haag's grade 4s where we watched a video on the ways that communities change over time.  The video discussed the pros and cons of development in communities, and the ways that these developments impact our lives today.  When we returned to class the students completed a quiz that was assessed to find their understanding of the video and its concepts.
During math today the children worked on their Abeka Arithmetic.  In today's lesson the students reviewed addition and subtraction, worked on telling time, measurement, and their 1 times tables. 

The students also went to PE, art and French classes today.

Good afternoon!

We had a fun and busy day in our Grade 3 classroom today!

We started off the day today with language where the students worked on creative writing. The students were asked to use their Creative Writing folders to write a story on a topic of their choice, but were asked to include at least 4 of their weekly spelling words.  The students then took turns sharing their stories with the class.  We heard a lot of very fun and interesting stories on topics such as aliens, royalty, crazy adventures and genies!  As a class we had a language lesson on how to use quotation marks and dialogue tags effectively in their writing.  This is something I encourage you to have your child practice in their writing at home.  The students also worked in their Language books where they practiced their rules of capitalization.

During our Unit of Inquiry today the students had a final opportunity to complete the research booklets they have been working on this week.  They worked so hard on these projects and had a such a fun time presenting and listening to the information their peers had gathered.  After the presentations the students took time to reflect and share one important piece of information they took from the presentations.  Ask your child tonight what they learned!  I have posted some pictures below of the students working, and some examples of their hard work for you to enjoy.

During math today the children continued working on exploring the hundreds place.  In today's class the students took time exploring hundreds charts from 201-1000 and were asked to count in different ways to find patterns in numbers.  Today we focused on counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s and looked to see patterns we could find in the ones column once we had collected our numbers.  The students are bringing home their Homework book with them tonight to continue practicing finding patterns in the ones column while looking thorugh these hundreds charts.  The students also worked in their Abeka Arithmetic books where they worked on adding and subtracting digits, place value and decimals.

The students also went to PE and French classes today.

Important information: I am still waiting for a couple more permission forms for the Toronto trip our class is taking on October 3rd.  The deadline for payment was yesterday.  If you have not yet sent in the $14 with the signed forms please do so as soon as possible.
