Bonjour!
We started off the day today with our weekly spelling test. The children are bringing home their marked spelling tests with them tonight. After spelling the children worked on language where they explored root words and suffixes and opposites. We read two more chapters of Charlotte's Web today called The Cool of the Evening and The Egg Sack, which the children really enjoyed. In our IB unit of Inquiry today we read another book all about energy and learned lots of interesting facts about energy. Some of the the things we discussed were power lines, lightening, the core of the earth, volcanoes and wasting energy. Ask your child tonight to tell you some of the facts they remember! We also watched a Bill Nye the Science Guy video all about energy which was a lot of fun. During math today the students worked on finding the cores of patterns (grade one) and completing word problems (grade two). They also went to french class.
Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each, cursive page76- 77 and math page 104 - 105, and Letters and Sounds page 84 - 85.
Important information: A form went home with the students tonight regarding the next Parent Guild meeting which is taking place on January 11th, 2012.
I want to remind all parents that agendas should be read and signed each and every night. Students will get stickers and house points for agendas that have been read and signed. Please help me to make sure that homework is being completed and important information is being communicated.
Please speak with your child to make sure they have all the supplies they need for class. Many children have used their pencils up, and lost/broken/used up their erasers and sharpeners. This is causing confusion and a great deal of lost work time in the classroom as children search and borrow these item from each other. Please take a moment to speak with your child over the weekend to get them re-stocked for the new year.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!
We are all happy to be back after the craziness of yesterday! Sorry again for any issues that may have caused. We started off the day today working on sentence writing. The students used their weekly spelling words and turned them into proper sentences for house points. After spelling the children worked on language where they explored root words and suffixes and finished sentences. We read another chapter of Charlotte's Web today called Uncle. In our IB unit of Inquiry today we read a book all about energy after doing a unit review. The children had a great time learning lots of interesting facts about the types and uses of energy. They wrote a summary of what they learned in their journals. Ask your child tonight to tell you what they learned! During math today the students worked on finding the cores of patterns (grade one) and completing word problems (grade two). They also went to french and music classes.
Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, cursive page74- 75 and math page 102 - 103.
Important information: I want to remind all parents that agendas should be read and signed each and every night. Students will get stickers and house points for agendas that have been read and signed. Please help me to make sure that homework is being completed and important information is being communicated.
Many forms and pieces of information came home with your child tonight. Please keep you eye out for any or all of the following forms- after-school care forms, class pictures, contact update forms, scholastic book order forms, piano sign-up forms, and dance class sign-up forms. Please send back the forms that are required back at school (scholastic if desired, contact information forms, and after-school care forms) as soon as possible.
Best regards,
Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!
It is very nice to be back to school and see all the familiar faces we have all been missing over the Christmas vacation! I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing holiday season.
We started off the day today working on our spelling. The students copied down the new weekly spelling words and worked in their spelling workbooks. We had sharing time today where we all shared the top two moments of our Christmas vacations. I really enjoyed hearing all the stories! The children then wrote about their vacations in their journals. We read another chapter of Charlotte's Web today called Off to the Fair which the students really enjoyed. During math today the students worked on correcting the cores of patterns (grade one) and adding and subtracting (grade two). They also went to french and music classes.
Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, spelling workbook page 61 - 64 (grade one) page 57 - 60 (grade two), cursive page72 - 73 and math page 100 - 101.
Important information: I am sending home the new January reading chart with the students tonight. December was a crazy month I know, and reading was not documented every night which is understandable. Please make sure to get back on track with your child starting tonight!
I want to remind all parents that agendas should be read and signed each and every night. Students will get stickers and house points for agendas that have been read and signed. Please help me to make sure that homework is being completed and important information is being communicated.

Mrs. Nelson

Good afternoon!
Thank you to everyone who made last night's concert a success. I think everyone had a wonderful time celebrating the Christmas season.
In the hast of yesterday and today, agendas and home folders did not go home. This is not a problem as we will just resume the routine in January when we return. Please just encourage your children to continue reading over the holiday.
Have a happy and safe Christmas everyone!
Best regards,
Mrs. Nelson

Hello!
We had a full day of dress rehearsals today. I am very excited to see everyone at the Christmas concert tonight!
Important information: We had our weekly spelling test today because of the shortened day tomorrow. Marked spelling tests will be coming home with the children tonight.
I am going to send the costumes home with the students today (if they are not in choir) so that they can come to school dressed as angels on tonight. Students who are in choir need to come to school dressed in their choir costumes. Their angel costumes will be waiting in the classroom to change into as soon as the choir is done performing.
Students from our class that are in the choir are Ninara, Seanna, Zuri, Emerald, Taha, Sofia, and Angela.
If you have any questions about the concert or costumes please see the drama blog.
Tomorrow is a half day. Students will be ready to be picked up at 11:30. After-school charges will begin at noon. Tomorrow is also a red and green spirit dress-up day.
We will be having a class party tomorrow. If you would like to send in any treats for your child to hand out that would be great.
Best regards,
Mrs. Nelson

Bonjour!
We had a full day of rehearsals today. The school came together in the morning and afternoon and rehearsed the play in full multiple times. In between rehearsals we worked on language where the children practiced special sounds, vowel sounds, picture words, rhyming words and worked on cursive writing. We also read another chapter of Charlotte's Web. The students also went to french and P.E classes.
Homework: Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words for tomorrow's test, Letters and Sounds page 80 - 81 and cursive page 68 - 69.
Important information: Due to the shortened day on Friday we are going to be having our weekly spelling test tomorrow morning. Please make sure your child does any final studying of their spelling words tonight in preparation for tomorrow's test.
As I stated in my post last night, many children are coming to school with their homework not completed, or forms and letters not delivered where they are meant to go. In hopes of opening the lines of communication between home and school, I am going to start rewarding students with house points and stickers every time they have their agendas signed by a parent. This way I can be certain that all homework and important information is being seen by parents, and any messages are being communicated back to me. I started this system this morning and only a few students were awarded stickers and house points. Please make sure to check and sign agendas nightly.
We are going to be having dress rehearsals all day again tomorrow in preparation for Thursday night's concert. Please make sure that all costumes are being sent into school to be available for these rehearsals because tomorrow we are actually going to be dressing up in them for the rehearsal.
