Good Morning,
The grade three class is going to work together in many ways over the next school year. One of the exciting things we are going to do together is explore the IB units of inquiry. You may even view the full breakdown of the entire POI for all classes for this school year on the school's website by downloading the POI document!
In our grade three class we are going to start off the year under the unit named How We Organize Ourselves. An IB description of this unit is as follows:
'An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.'
In this unit the students will be exploring the following Central Idea- Geographic and environmental factors influence the development of communities.
The three lines of inquiry we will be inquiring into to help guide the students towards understanding the central idea are:
1. Features of urban and rural communities
2. Factors that influence the location of communities
3. Changes in modern day communities
I can't wait to get started!

Good afternoon!
As teachers, we are completing the finishing touches on our organization for the upcoming school year and cannot wait to get started on all the of the inquiry and exploration we have planned for this year!
If your child is just as excited as I am about getting back into the swing of things, it might be an idea to allow them to practice some of the math and language based educational games I have posted on my blog. If you have a look just to the right of this posting there is a list of interesting websites. If you bring your child to ancya.com or funschool.kaboose.com (links are provided there for you) there are a number of fun and educational games to get back into 'school-mode'. It is also a great way to practice their computer skills which is an important skill to develop in today's world.
Enjoy seeing them having fun while learning!

I had a great night last seeing a number of SJA families. It is a very exciting time of year as we all get the final touches ready for a new school year. I had a few quick updates from last night Orientation Night that I wanted to pass on to our grade three families...
I had a great night last seeing a number of SJA families. It is a very exciting time of year as we all get the final touches ready for a new school year. I had a few quick updates from last night Orientation Night that I wanted to pass on to our grade three families...
This year our class is going to be using the lockers which are located
just outside of our classroom. This means that all children in our class are
asked to bring a lock with them to be used. Please make sure that if your child
is using a combination lock I will have access to the combination prior to use.
If your child is using a key for their lock, please make sure there is a spare
key for me to hold in case the original one goes missing.
Grade 3 is the first year that students come to school wearing their full
uniform everyday, and will be asked to change into their gym clothes here at
school prior to PE. Please make sure your child has their gym clothes at school
to change into everyday. If this is going to be something that is new to them,
please help them to get used to this process at home in the next couple
weeks. Your children will be responsible for remembering to bring their gym
clothes home to be washed, so please help them with reminders at home as I do
the same here at school.

Good morning!
I cannot believe I am writing my last blog post of the 2012/13 school year! This year has flown by with a great deal of growth and development occurring along the way. I am so proud of the student advancements that I have been lucky enough to be a witness to. They have definitely shown what passionate, active, and accountable learners they can be throughout this school year.
I am also so proud to be a part of St. Jude's Academy as we officially became a recognized IB World School. This journey has been insightful and inspiring as we worked hard to obtain our certification to join schools around the world that consistently offer the highest quality education. I am proud to have been the IB Coordinator during this exciting time!
I am already excited to be back at SJA full-time next year as the PYP Coordinator and also teaching grade three. I cannot wait for the fun and learning that I know we are going to do together.
I wish all SJA families a safe and happy summer filled with memories and look forward to seeing everyone back in September!

Good afternoon!
As I am sure most of you have heard, we have officially become an IB World School this past week! We are thrilled to be able to share this news and finally become a full member of IB. This has been a goal of SJA's for many years and has taken a great deal of hard work from the teachers and students. We are very excited to have this goal met with our official IB certification!
I have been doing a great deal of professional development over the last few weeks as the school year comes to a close. One thing I have been looking closely at are additional fun and creative ways to incorporate the Learner Profile into the classrooms next year. In my research I have found a video that I think helps to give a great visual of the 10 Learner Profile Attributes. Please take a moment to view the video and become more familiar with these important attributes.

Good morning!
Ms. Chin's grade 5 and 6 class have been working so very hard over the last few weeks in preparation for their Exhibition that is taking place next week. The Exhibition is the cumulative task of the PYP program that allows the grade 6 students to present the learning that they have done within the PYP program. This year Ms. Chin's class has decided to do their investigation under the theme 'Sharing the Planet' and a great deal of information and action has taken place as a result! Topics such as homelessness, racism and poverty are being explored at an in depth level, and the students are creating their own plans of action to bring some positive changes to the issue they have chosen to thoroughly investigate. These projects are a great way for the students to display the knowledge and understanding they have not only of these specific topics, but world issues in general due to their efforts within the PYP program. I truly believe you are out to be impressed!
The students will be presenting their projects at two different times- Wednesday at 12:30pm, as well as later that evening at 6pm. Parents have the option to attend one or both showings depending on their availability. This is a great event not only for parents that have a child who is presenting, but also for any parent of a SJA child to see the exciting end to the PYP program that every SJA student will eventually embark on.
