Good afternoon!

The students began the day today by having their weekly spelling test.  The marked spelling tests are coming home with every child tonight.  I ask that every incorrectly spelled word gets re-written ten times each in their spelling books.  In today's IB unit of inquiry we began discussing the importance of water.   We discussed how every species relies on water in some way, and the children made posters explaining why water is important to them.  We also began the preparation four our big science experiment that is taking place on Tuesday.  As a class we are studying water conservation, and we decided to test how much water is lost with a leaky tap.  In today's class the children all began their science experiment booklet by completing the title page, their question and their hypothesis for the upcoming experiment.  A few students are bringing home their booklet to complete this section for homework over the weekend.  During math the children worked on counting money, telling time, and sums and differences (grade one) and analysed data provided to them in a graph (grade two).  The grade twos finished their Jump Math books today!  These completed books may now stay at home with them to be used as references.  The students also went to French and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, re-write incorrect spelling words ten times each,  complete first page of science booklet,  Jump Math pages 215 - 216 (grade two), and complete math worksheet (grade ones).

Important information:  Our class is heading out on a field trip!  We are going to attend the Peel Children's Water Festival on May 24th from 9am - 3pm.  On this trip we will be learning about water and our environment, and how humans need to be careful in the ways we use and treat water.  This trip is a part of our current IB unit.  The signed trip form and $7.00 are due by Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012.  

On June 13th SJA will be having our first school-wide Spelling Bee.  Classes will be competing against each other to find a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner!  All children have a chance to participate, but only 5 students will be chosen from each class to head to the finals on June 13th.  I have sent home the spelling list with every child tonight.  Please use this list to help them study over the next month, as these will be the exact words used in the competition.

The students began the day today by writing fictional stories using their spelling words.  They are beginning to be very good at this weekly task and I am continually impressed with the creativity I see from them!  In our unit of inquiry we continued exploring groups of living things.  In today's class we focused on mammals.  We explored books about mammals and got to see a lot of very interesting things!  The children then went back to their desks and reflected on 3 things they learned about mammals today, and 1 question they still have about mammals.  Some children need to finish this task for homework.  Ask your child to share with you one fact they learned today!  During language today we read another chapter of Winnie-the-Pooh and the students worked in their novel study groups creating a chapter summary.  During math the children worked on counting money, telling time, and sums and differences (grade one) and sorted and analysed data (grade two)  The students also went to French and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words,  complete mammals journal summary,  cursive pages 219 - 221, Jump Math pages 212 - 214 (grade two), and complete math worksheet (grade ones).

Important information:  Tomorrow we are going to be having a class Subway lunch party.  This is the second half of our prize that we won from Provincial Partitions way back in October for having the best decorated pumpkin.  All children will be able to have a subway sandwich for lunch (veggie subs will be available).  Drinks and snacks will still be required for this day.

Good afternoon!


We started off the day today by working on a writing activity.  We explored couplets (two-lined poems) and investigated the characteristics of them.  The children were then asked to go back and create their own couplets that they read out loud to the class.  They did a very good job and had some very creative poems to share!  In our unit of inquiry we continued their discussions of living and non-living things.  We reviewed what we learned yesterday about reptiles and their basic needs.  Then we began discussing insects and explored the characteristics that make a creature an insect.  The children then went back to their seats and created Venn Diagrams that compared and contrasted reptiles and insects.  This was a fun way to see what they have learned.  Ask your child to share with you one fact they learned about insects today!  During language the children worked on proofreading.  The students were asked to review various sentences and see if they were statements (needing periods) or questions (needing question marks).  During math the children worked on counting money, half/whole, and sums and differences (grade one) and sorted and made rules for various types of data (grade two)  The students also went to French and music classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words,  Spelling Workbook pages 130 - 132 (grade one) 126 - 128 (grade two),  Jump Math pages 206 - 208 (grade two), and complete math worksheet (grade ones).

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Mother's day weekend!  We started off the day today by copying down the new weekly spelling words and working in our spelling workbooks.  The grade ones worked on words with 'th' or 'wh' in them, where the grade twos worked on words with 'oo' in them.   In our unit of inquiry the children continued their discussions of living and non-living things.  We reviewed the discussions we had on Friday about mammals, reptiles, insects and their basic needs.  We spoke about the basic needs of human beings and how these can be the same or different from other animals.  Today we focused on reptiles and the basic needs of this group.  We read books together as a class exploring them, and the children wrote summaries of their learning in their journals.  Ask your child to share with you one fact they learned about reptiles tonight!  During language the children wrote summaries of their weekend.  During math the children worked on telling time, word problems, and sums and differences (grade one) and sorted and made rules for various types of data (grade two)  The students also went to French and P.E classes.

Bonjour!

I was out of the classroom for the majority of the day today at an IB event.  While I was away, the students began the day working on language.  They did a review of nouns, and worked on identifying nouns and plural nouns in a variety of sentences.  Ask your child tonight to tell you the definition of a noun! In our unit of inquiry the children began a discussion of living and non-living things.  They got into pairs and created definitions of 'living' and 'non-living' things.  The class then came together and listened to all the different definitions that the students had come up with.  They had a class discussion and came to an agreement of what it means to be a 'living' and 'non-living' thing. The completed letter and the checklist will be coming home with all students tomorrow.  During the afternoon the children worked hard on a craft which they will be bringing home with them tomorrow.  The students also went to French and music classes.

Good afternoon!

 Our class started off the day by working in the computer lab.  The students had a lot of fun working on their mouse, keyboard and Internet skills!  During language today the children began their novel study project.   As a class we read Chapter one of Winnie The Pooh by A.A Milne.  After we completed the chapter the children all got into their novel study groups and began working on their chapter reviews.  The groups are all asked to complete a summary of the events, ask two questions about the chapter, make two predictions for the next chapter, and draw a complimenting illustration.   Ask your child tonight how their novel study went today!  In our unit of inquiry the children worked on their good copies of their letters to 'Mother Nature' thanking her for the environment.  All children completed their good copies that will not be marked with a checklist.  The completed letter and the checklist will be coming home with all students tomorrow.  During math the students worked on counting by tens, sums and differences, and counting money (grade one) and sorting and organizing various types of data (grade two).   The students also went to French and P.E classes.

Homework:  Read for 15 minutes and record in the reading chart, practice weekly spelling words, Jump Math pages 201 - 202 (grade two), complete A Beka Math worksheet (grade one) and Cursive pages 203 - 205.
